Maintaining a clean and safe jobsite is essential for both productivity and health. ACME Tools recently tasked us with evaluating the JET AFS-850 Mobile Air Filter to determine its effectiveness and value as a dust control solution for construction sites. Priced at $699, the AFS-850 isn’t cheap, but what good tool is? Let’s explore what this tool offers and whether it justifies its price tag.

Why Choose the JET AFS-850?

In the realm of remodeling and construction, the term “livable remodeling” has gained prominence. This approach focuses on delivering building and remodeling services that:

  • Reduce Stress: Streamlined processes make the remodeling experience less overwhelming for clients.
  • Minimize Health Risks: Effective dust control mitigates airborne dust hazards.
  • Ensure Livability: Homes remain comfortable and functional throughout the remodeling process
  • Promote Communication and Professionalism: Clear interactions build trust and satisfaction.

Using outdated methods, like a box fan in the window, not only fails to meet modern standards but also violates EPA regulations, which now require certified HEPA equipment to capture and contain dust effectively. A combination of collecting dust at its source, air filtration and dust barriers are the better practices. The JET AFS-850 aligns with these best practices, helping to keep dust from spreading to non-work areas and safeguarding the health of both workers and homeowners.

Summary of Dust Control | Best Practices

  1. Set Expectations:
  2. Communicate clearly with homeowners about dust control measures.
  3. Isolate the Work Area:
  4. Use barriers like ZipWall and ZipDoor to seal off the space.
  5. Establish Negative Air Pressure:
  6. Use air scrubbers to direct dust out of the area or air filters like the JET Filter.
  7. Seal Ductwork: Prevent dust from spreading through HVAC systems.
  8. Daily Cleanup: Regularly remove dust to maintain a clean environment.

These steps help keep dust contained, protecting other areas of the home and reducing cleanup efforts.

Health Implications of Dust

Dust isn’t merely a nuisance—it poses significant health risks, including:

  • Asthma Triggers: Can exacerbate asthma in both children and adults.
  • Allergic Reactions: Increases the likelihood of allergic responses.
  • Chronic Respiratory Issues: Aggravates conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Effective dust control systems like the JET AFS-850 are crucial in mitigating these health hazards, making it a valuable addition to any job site.

  5. Set the timer to automatically shut off the unit after a specified period (1-16 hours) This can be useful to continue to filter the air after you leave an area.
  6. The intuitive control panel makes it easy to customize settings based on the jobsite’s needs, ensuring optimal dust control with minimal effort.

Our User Experience and Operation

We are firm believers in connecting dust making tools to vacuums. That said to see if the the JET AFS-850 Mobile Air Filter worked well we needed to make some dust.

We set the JET filter up in different situations to test it:

  • In a room cutting and routing drywall
  • Next to a table saw cutting everything from pine, plywood and MDF.
  • In a demo area
  • Next to sanding and cutting MDF

In the end the best way to show the filter in action was to place it near us when cutting and sanding MDF cabinet panels. We set the JET Filter to AUTO mode and left it alone. Shortly after cutting or sanding the MDF we could hear the filter motor ramp up and stay high for a period until the proverbial saying “when the dust settled,” or in this case was filtered!

Again, I’m not advocating that you sand or cut MDF without dust collection, my point is that this JET filter is part of the overall solution to cleaner air.

Maintenance and Filter Replacement

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficiency of the AFS-850 and we noted that after 3 weeks of using the filter we were able to easily clean it with a vacuum.Removing, cleaning or changing out the pre-filter and pleated filter is easy.

Removing or Changing Filter

1. Power Off and unplug the unit.
2. Unlock Fan Head: Place a foot on the base, grasp the ring handle, and turn the fan head counterclockwise.
3. Remove Filters: Lift the fan head and remove the pre-filter and canister filter.
4. Clean or Replace: Wash or vacuum the pre-filter or replace it.
5. Vacuum the canister filter with a brush attachment or replace it if necessary.
6. Reassemble

Its also recommended that you wipe down the integrated PM2.5 sensor clean with a dry cloth or compressed air to maintain accurate auto mode functionality. This sensor is located on the underside of the blower hool.

JET AFS-850 | Pros and Cons

Metabo W 12-125 HD CED PLUS 5″ Masonry Cutting and Scoring Tool is a Real Problem Solver

The old adage that “Stuff Happens” is alive and well in the construction industry. Well, I cured my most recent construction site “stuff” with the Metabo 5″ Masonry Cutting and Scoring Tool.

Fixing Bad Concrete

I had to fix a section of a poorly constructed concrete floor this past weekend. I measured the defective section as approximately 11 feet long by 4 feet wide. For our “fix”, we decided to chip up the old floor to a depth of more than 2 inches. In addition, we elected to add a stainless steel floor medallion in the new concrete and we added a contrasting aggregate and colored cement into the new area.

We knew that the remedial operation would required a very precise cut between the new and old concrete areas. That is why we selected the Metabo 5″ Masonry Cutting and Scoring Tool equipment to play a key role.

Solving the Problem With Metabo

I introduced the Metabo 12 125 to the concrete flooring subcontractor when they arrived on site. The crew from Triad Associates had not seen this equipment before. In spite of that, they immediately liked the equipment and were enthusiastic to try it out.

Metabo 5″ Masonry Cutting and Scoring Tool Features and Specifications

  • Revolutions at rated load = 8800 RPM
  • Torque = 36 in-lbs
  • Spindle thread = M 14
  • Weight (without power cable) = 9.7 lbs
  • Cable length = 13 ft
  • Sound pressure level = 94 dB(A)

Making the Cut

The wall chaser is often paired with an aluminum track that makes it function much like a track saw for wood work. I did not have the aluminum tracks so Triad used a 6’ level to guide the saw. That worked very well.

Triad paired the wall chaser to their HEPA filtered dust extractor. The dust shroud connection for extraction is Ø 1-1/2″ and fit their collector’s hose with no issues. The dust collection was perfect with no apparent dust escaping the unit.

The Triad operator, however, made a change to the wall chaser configuration. After the first two feet of cut, he changed the handle from the left to the right side of the unit. This change gave him better stability and he guided the unit with greater accuracy.

The Triad crew cut the fifteen feet of concrete cutting in less than three minutes. The cut was straight and showed no signs of the aggregate dislodging on either side of the cut. The Triad crew was very impressed with the results.

Product Improvements

Triad had some suggestions about product improvements. First, they though the tool would benefit from additional weight. I noticed their walk-behind machine had 20# of weights added to it. While no one would add that amount of weight to a hand tool, the additional mass would certainly help with stability.
Triad also suggested that the barrel grip on the back part of the tool would be improved with the addition of a D-handle. A “D” handle would allow for easier vertical pressure and forward thrust than the plain barrel grip. ( I noticed that the Metabo tool, MFE 40, has such a grip.)

The user can set the depth of the maximum cut with a depth gauge on the back of the tool. In addition, the crew suggested that the 12 125 would work better with a lock that would fix the cut to a particular depth. The entire body currently pivots with no lock between the initial position and the maximum depth setting.

Summary

Triad is in the business of concrete flooring and concrete repairs. While they have a larger walk-behind concrete cutting saw, the Metabo 5″ Masonry Cutting and Scoring Tool fits a real niche where shorter distances, close-in work and more accuracy are important. For my part, the 12 125 played an important to clear up one of my problem areas. I do recommend you purchase the accessory track for it, we didn’t have it, but it would make things a lot easier.

It is a real winner for this type of work.

Fleece Bags vs Filter Replacement: What’s the REAL COST?

Dust Extractor Fleece Bags are less expensive to use and replace than the vacuum pleated filters. Using fleece filter bags drastically improves the lifespan of both standard and HEPA filters, and protects the vacuum motor. Using them provides you with a massive cost savings over the course of a year, or lifespan of the vacuum unit.

The table below shows the cost of fleece bags is more economical than the cost for a standard filter [2 pack] replacement for the vacuum.

One Year Operating Cost Example

Manufacturer 1 Fleece Bag Regular Filter HEPA Filter
Bosch $7.00 $26.00 $98.00
Dewalt $8.00 N/A HEPA only $75.00
Festool $9.00 $28.00 $96.00
Milwaukee $8.00 $59.00 $79.00
Metabo $14.00 $157.00 $219.00
Hilti $8.00 $142.00 $160.00
Makita $7.00 N/A HEPA only $60.00
Fein $8.00 $65.00 $110.00

Importance of Using Fleece Bags in a Dust Extractor: 4 Reasons

Below are four reasons to use dust extractor fleece bags. Probably the BIGGEST and most important reason to use fleece filter bags is to keep Silica, lead dust and other harmful dust exposure to a minimum when emptying the vacuum.

Durability

Fleece filter bags are more durable than their paper counterparts. If you are a painter or drywall finisher and using your dust extractor exclusively for sanding dust you might be OK with paper filter bags. But with general use and cleanup we find the durability of fleece bags to be necessary.

Exposure / Safety

Emptying a vacuum canister exposes the user to dust inhalation but Fleece bags unhook from the vacuum inlet and can be closed off, thrown away, minimizing and eliminating exposure to silica, lead paint or other  harmful agents.

Performance

Fleece bags provide a redundant protection the the vacuum meter and bearings. Even with auto filter clean, present on all of these extractors, the filters eventually will get clogged up or could develop a tear. Experience has shown that insulation, coarse sawdust and fine particulate matter can ruin the filter over time. Fleece filters help maintain suction, and protect the main, more expensive filters, and vacuum motor.

Annual Cost Filter vs Fleece Bags

Assuming remodeling jobsite use and using the Bosch dust extractor I will go through a pack of bags on a kitchen and powder room remodel. This is an occupied space so I am cleaning up the whole site with this dust extractor every day. If I were not using filter bags I would replace the filter at the end of this job. Total job duration will be approximately 4 months (frame to high end finish). So for the estimated cost of use, I am assuming 4 packs of filter bags or 4 filters annually.
Manufacturer Filter Bags Cost [Reg Filter] Cost [HEPA]
4 packs per year 4 filters per year 4 filters per year
Bosch $141.68 $103.96 $392.00
Dewalt $151.96 N/A HEPA only

$299.96

Festool $184.00 $112.00 $384.00
Milwaukee $160.00 $236.00 $316.00
Metabo $276.00 $628.00 $874.24
Hilti $157.00 $568.00 $640.00
Makita $143.60 N/A HEPA only $241.00
Fein $151.96 $259.96 $439.96

Manufacturer: Makita
Model number: XCV04Z
Price: 569.00
Power source: [2] 18 Volt
Motor size: brushless
Weight: 21.8
A good dust control strategy is essential to being a professional contractor and keeping your customer happy throughout a construction project.

I’ve learned early on that capturing and controlling remodeling dust by keeping it out of the air and the non-remodeled area of your client’s home is often more important than the quality of your work.

No one enjoys having to clean the job site after a sanding, cutting or drilling application that creates airborne dust that spreads EVERYWHERE!

Silica is the NEW Asbestos

Dust inhalation can cause occupational asthma, silicosis, cancer and other debilitating respiratory diseases.

Silica has been called the “New Asbestos”, and the U.S. Department of Labor and OSHA have issued rulings on reducing the permissible exposure limits for workers in our industry. OSHA has a Table 1 standard that identifies 18 common construction tasks that generate high exposures to respirable crystalline silica and for each task, specifies engineering controls, work practices and respiratory protection that effectively protect workers.

Makita XCV07Z 18V X2 LXT Cordless Dry Vacuum

This new Makita 2.1 gallon vacuum meets OSHA Table 1 requirements based on its 99.97% filter efficiency, filter-cleaning mechanism and CFM rating.

It can be used for small drilling and chipping applications. the best part is it weighs 21.8 pounds. [including 2 batteries]

Cordless Power

The Makita XCV04Z Vacuum has a powerful 9.2 amp motor, when equipped with two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries it delivers 74 CFM and 36 in. water lift of suction using CORDLESS power.

A suction control dial allows you to dial in for a variety of applications, although we left this in the highest setting for all our testing and use.

NOTE – if your looking for more suction, or are performing surfacing  you will want to look at the corded version AC/DC] which boasts 127 CFM and 96 inches water lift of suction.

Makita XCV07Z Run Time

When powered by two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 5.0 Ah batteries the Maikta vacuum will operate for approximately 65 minutes of continuous run time on low setting, and 30 minutes on high setting.

The MAKITA vacuum saw runs off of two 18 volt batteries, and draws power from both of them at the same time. It will NOT operate on one battery. Dual L.E.D. battery indicators show charge level for each 18V battery.

We used this vacuum to collect concrete dust while drilling several 3/8” holes and during a chipping application.

As far as the two batteries go, I’m starting to come around to them. MAKITA feels strongly that staying in the 18-volt platform is the right choice for their end-users. They feel that if they can accomplish their task with one battery they will. When the task requires high-power, more speed and or more run-time, then they design their tool with two batteries.

Makita Filter Efficiency

This vacuum features an efficient three stage HEPA filtration system captures 99.97% of particulates .3 microns and larger. Makita designed a filter cleaning system to meet the new OSHA Silica rule.  The filter cleaning system maintains optimum suction efficiency and longer filter life.

It’s not until you actually open this unit and change out the plastic bag that you can appreciate three stage filtration. Everything fits snug, has rubber seals and is made with quality materials.

The filter cleaning system works this way. When the dust collector is operating (on mode), a damper compresses around the main HEPA filter. When the dust extractor is turned off, this damper rapidly expands back to its normal shape, cleaning [shaking] the debris off the pre-filter maintaining filter efficiency required for efficient suction performance.

Filter System Components

  • (1) Plastic Disposal Bag,
  • (1) HEPA Filter (197166-6)
  • (1) Damper Filter (423398-2)
  • (1) Pre-Filter (195553-3)

Noise

The Makita vacuums motor chamber is constructed of quality sound-absorbing materials for quieter operating sound levels. It is rated at 64 dB(A) and is reasonably quiet.

Overload Protection

The Makita vacuum is equipped with a overload and over heat protection. If the tool is operated in a manner that causes it to draw an abnormally high current, the tool automatically stops.  If the tool is overheated you will notice that the battery indicator  will blink for 60-seconds.

Using the Makita XCV07Z Vacuum

We brought this vac, along with a cordless SDS hammer drill to our job site to prep some concrete walls and to chip some irregularities left behind from enlarging, cutting out, a concrete wall.

The vacuum is a no-nonsense tool, there is not a lot of bells and whistles to learn, and we like that. We also liked that the unit has a large, oversized on-off switch, and found it easy to operate with your foot. The folding top handle is super convenient for carrying this vac, and folds flat when not needed or when storing.  The 1-inch anti-static hose is 11-feet long and made from durable, quality materials. It extended well and did not kink and twist easily.

The large rubber bumper help protect interior trim or other woodwork. The vacuum’s small wheel casters allow the unit to be easily wheeled on hardwood, and carpet. The unit did struggle rolling on large debris.  We noticed that the vacuum wheel casters look a lot like an office chair caster instead of a heavy duty wheel like this vacs bigger brother has. The rear casters feature locking levers to prevent the vacuum from moving and worked fine.

Storage Bin

The rear of the vacuum has a removable storage box for storing attachments, batteries and cord rack. This storage box also has indexed storage to securely houses the following hose adapters:

  • (1) Tool Cuff Adapter, 24mm for 1″ hose (424379-9)
  • (1) Tool Cuff Adapter, 22mm for 1″ hose (417765-1)
  • (1) Tool Cuff Adapter, 38mm for 1″ hose (417766-9)

Makita XCV04Z Specifications

  • 2.1 gallon capacity
  • 65 minutes run time
  • AMPS : 9.2
  • Auto Filter Cleaning System
  • HEPA filter
  • 99.97% of .3 microns filter efficiency
  • Working Sound Level : 64 dB(A)
  • 21.8 lbs. with batteries

Improvements To The Makita XCV07Z Vacuum

The Makita XCV07Z performed well in our testing. My only dig to this vacuum is reduced cfms when compared to the corded unit. The corded vacuum achieves 127 cfms vs 74 cfms with the battery model.

Makita XCV07Z Vacuum Cost

The Makita XCV07Z sells online for approximately $369.99

Overall Impression

For us the compact, lightweight ability to get a cordless dust extractor operation to the jobsite was appreciated and makes following Table 1 easier. The small footprint makes it easy to carry, transport and store in our tool trailer and always be there when needed. It’s also a GREAT size for small drilling applications and because its not a huge, heavy unit my guys are more likely to use it for small stuff, and NOT blow it off – that’s a win for their health.

Festool Plug-It Cord and Sleeve Review

Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve 201778

Manufacturer: Festool
Model number: 201778
Price: 375.00
Until recently I used to get frustrated using my Festool TS55 Track saw with dust collection. The issue, I kept getting hooked on the rail or the corner of the board because to hose and cord would snag. It go to the point that I considered taping the two together until I came across the Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve 201778.

What is the Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve 201778

The Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve 201778 an anti-static dust extraction hose with and integrated sleeve that housed the power cord, and protects the surface and edges of the material your working on.

This sleeve helps you work more efficiently and safely by preventing static discharge or shocks.  By eliminating the static charge dust, dirt and particulates do not stick to the hose creating better efficient clearing of the hose.

Durable Sleeve Design

We found that the Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve 201778 has a durable and flexible sleeve design. During our use we did not experience any binding or kinking. The sleeve shrouds the hose to help prevent the rib of the hose from catching on materials which may damage the surface. The sleeve also allows the hose to easily navigate over edges of work tables for easier work flow while sanding.

Integrated 16 AWG Plug It Cord

The Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve 201778 is equipped with an integrated Plug It Cord that connects the vacuum to the tool. As mentioned above, this cord is completely enclosed within the sleeve.

Compatibility

The 10m (32 feet, 9 inches) tapered vacuum hose fits the new ETS EC sanders as well as many of Festools existing sanders. Integrated 16 AWG Plug It Cord is compatible with many Festool tools. It also features Festools new upgraded bayonet-style tool connector.

For Use With The Following Festool Vacuums

  • CT 26 E
  • CT 33
  • CT 36 AC
  • CT 36 E
  • CT 48 E
  • CT MIDI
  • CT MINI Cost

Features

  • Integrated 16 AWG Plug It Cord is compatible with many Festool tools.
  • For use with ETS EC Sanders
  • Length: 10m (32 feet, 9 inches)
  • Hose Diameter: Tapered from 32mm to 22mm

Cost

The Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve 201778 cost $375.00.

Improvement

After using the Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve, I could not think of improvements. I suppose I’d like to see a systainer box to store and transport it.

The 10m hose I have is a bit long for my workshop but they also offer the Festool 500276 Hose w/ Sleeve in SYS 3 Systainer 3.5m. This 11’6” long hose is probably more suited for my shop. It’s also $125 less money.

Overall Impression

The Festool Integrated Plug-it Cord and Sleeve 201778 is basically a 2-in-1 tool. Its faster, easier to use, is anti-static and doesn’t snag on your work. Festool has become an industry leader with innovative high quality woodworking and finish carpenter tools, that solve problems, this integrated hose is another example.

Milwaukee Dust Extraction Solutions

Tick, tick, tick. That’s the sound of the time marching on towards June 23rd, the date when enforcement of the new OSHA silica exposure rule was supposed to go into effect. Until last week a lot of us contractors have been scrambling to get all of our concrete tools updated with dust extraction interfaces. Things will be switching soon from a PPE (personal protective equipment) solution to an engineering control based solution. This means that when cutting, drilling or grinding concrete, the dust is collected or controlled at the source instead of relying on a respirator at the last possible moment before breathing it. Milwaukee Dust Extraction-6

It was a welcome relief when many companies, including our own, learned that OSHA had pushed back the enforcement date 90 days. It gives all of us a little more time to get our ducks in a row to make sure our employees are protected instead of rushing into it and hope we have it figured out.

Maybe Milwaukee needed a little extra time too to make sure they get it right. At the 11th hour they’ve announced an expansion of dust extraction solutions.  While they’ve had the HammerVacs for awhile, the new shrouds, chisel boots, and HEPA vacuum are new.Milwaukee Dust Extraction-3

What Does It Mean

So what does this mean? As an end user if you buy a Milwaukee rotary hammer or grinder, you can be confident that there is a dust extraction solution to make that tool comply with the silica rule. These solutions also work with many older Milwaukee grinders and rotary hammers. These solutions work with many competitor’s tools as well.

Milwaukee Dust Extraction-2

HammerVac works with just about anyone’s rotary hammer

There is a “but” though, two of Milwaukee’s biggest grinders have too much surface area and OSHA requires >175 CFM for these tools. As of this writing, none of the major tool brands have a HEPA vac capable of that volume.

8 Gallon Dust Extractor

The cornerstone of Milwaukee’s dust extraction solutions is their new 8 gallon HEPA vac. This unit is auto filter cleaning, meets OSHA compliance, has power tool actuation (corded tools only), and 148 CFM. The hose end of the unit of course hooks up to all of the shrouds and boots in the lineup.Milwaukee Dust Extraction-5

Improvements

I think the introductions are a great first step and will ensure just about anyone that they are in compliance with the new OSHA silica rule. If I’m being honest though there are a couple things I’d like to see improved in the 2nd generation. First, get a little more CFM out of the HEPA vac so that the big grinders can be in compliance too. Lastly, I’d like to see Milwaukee develop a hollow bit like Hilti’s or Bosch’s. We use the Hilti ones all the time on the job site and they clean the hole perfectly so we don’t have to blow them out before injecting epoxy.Milwaukee Dust Extraction-7

The new OSHA regulation on respirable crystalline silica dust (29 CFR 1926.1153) will be enforced for construction trades starting on September 23, 2017. This regulation reduces the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) to 50 µg/m3 over an 8-hour period and will affect jobsite nationwide.

** In order to be compliant with the new regulation* companies prove they are under the PEL by following Table 1 standards, demonstrating objective data, or conducting their own self-monitoring programs, as laid out by OSHA. [See attached document for how each of our tools comply].

FESTOOL Cleantec HEPA Dust Extractors

Festool, the only company that manufactures a vacuum designed especially for their tools is looking to create the perfect tool to vacuum relationship. Some call it a workshop love affair, I call it genius! Below is some information I learned about FESTOOL Dust Extractors.

Festool Dust Extractors

For US and Canada users Festool has four categories of Festool Dust Extractors. All of them are certified HEPA dust extractors:

  1. Assembly work: Low dust volume                 Mini and Mini CT vacuums
  2. Assembly work: Medium dust volume         26 and 36E vacuums
  3. Workshop: Huge dust volume                       CT 48E
  4. Construction: Huge dust volume                  CT 36E AC [not HEPA rated]

Festool dust extractors use HEPA 13 standard which is % 99.99 dust collection efficient.

Factoid

Did you know that Festool manufacturers 43 types of dust extractors in 6 container sizes, in 4 dust classes, for use with power tools and pneumatic tools.

Festool Dust Extractors

FESTOOL Dust Extractors – Motor Life

Festool dust extractors have a motor life expectancy of up to 1,200 running hours. According to their engineer team, that equates to 15-20 years of use.

During the development stage, Festool placed special information collecting sensors inside their test vacuums and gave them to contractors to use for a year.   That research showed that most users operate their vacuums in short cycles. The longest recorded operation time was 6-hours, which was wall sanding.

The Festool vacuums have safeguards built in to prevent user error from destroying the machine.  For example, if the bag is overfilled or hose is obstructed, the lack of air flow can damage the tool. To prevent cause excessive pressure damage, a relief valve on the rear of the tool opens to allow air to pass through the machine and cool the motor.

Festool Dust Extractors

New Cleantec D27DM – AS/CT Dust Port Connector

Festool improved the dust hose connection the tool port. The new connection is available now as an accessory and proved a better, more secure connection of the hose to tool.  The new hose port is compatible on older Festool tools and vacuums.  The new sleeve connector, part #487071, will prevent the hose from disconnecting as you move your tool.

Festool Dust Extractor Hoses

Festool manufactures two types of hoses, green and gray hoses. Green are anti-static and are more expensive, gray hoses are less expensive but not anti-static.  The hoses can range from 11 to 328 feet. [Note – consult Festool if you need to run a super long hose – you will need to use special connections.]

One nice feature that I like is the Codura hose and power cord cover. [Shown below]

dsc00410Self Clean Filter Feature

All  CT 36 FESTOOL Dust Extractorshave a self-cleaning filter feature. This feature reverses air and pulses it through the filter 6 times per minute. This continuous cleaning cycle ensures that the  filter does not clog and maintains its filtering integrity.

It’s important to note that you want to protect your investment and ensure a clean environment you MUST use paper bags when using these vacuums. Using dust bags helps prevent dust from reaching your filter and motor  and will reduce possible maintenance cost.

Suction Dial Control

There are many Festool dust extractor owners who do not understand the purpose of the dust control dial.  Many, including myself simply turn it to max with the belief that more is better.  While this is fine with wood chip and large debris removal it will actually hurt your performance when sanding materials.

Small orbital sanders like the RTS  and ETS models will not “float” on the wall or wood surface and can actually cause swirl marks and excessive vibration.

Festool Ap

Festool has a phone AP that controls some of their sanders with NFC chip technology.   The NFC technology is currently in Festools ETS EC 150-/3+5 and 125 models. Unfortunately, this NFC APP is not supported in North America and not available.

Owners can also program their Festools sanders to lock off if the dust hose is not attached. The function to lock on or off is not APP dependent. It can be programmed by the user through the power switch. No APP needed.

Festool Dust Extractors
Blowing the Dust Off

I’ve been collecting dust at its source for year and am a huge believer in its benefits. In my experience, without dust collection, and dust containment barriers, a work crew can spend hours cleaning up a clients house or area. I personally own the CT Mini for sometime mostly as small cutting or sanding operation vacuum. For me, the attraction to the mini was its size and weight and I was able to transport that easily to locations where huge dust collection was not a concern.

By offering so many vacuums I believe Festool is making a conscious effort to place us in the best position to succeed.  Dust extraction is smart, professional, reduces clean up time and is simply healthier for you and your crew.

Festool CT SYS Performance

The CT SYS vacuum started off vacuuming up sawdust during a custom cabinet job and by mid day it was connected to my miter saw to make it dust free.  The vacuum is lightweight, compact, and easily portable.  The 9.5’ long vacuum hose was beneficial for vacuuming the tops of the cabinets. It comes with two nozzles that worked well while cleaning out all of the nooks and crannies on the job site.  Both nozzles can be stored inside the vacuum and fit snugly into their own holders.

Each job that I brought the CT SYS dust extractor on made clean up easier than before. It is standard practice for my company to carry a vacuum on site and leave the clients’ homes the way we found them .  This smaller and very efficient dust extractor made clean up not only easier but faster too.

In the past with my older and larger vacuums I would need to place the unit down because of its size and weight. Then I would stretch the hose as far as possible while sometimes dragging the hose up several stairs to vacuum the top landing or top step.  If the hose didn’t reach, then this bulky vacuum would need to be carried up the stairs that were just vacuumed!  With the CT SYS shoulder strap, long anti-static hose, and generous power cord, vacuuming stairs or anywhere in the client’s home can be done in half the time.

Tool Trigger Operation

One of my favorite features of the vacuum is the tool trigger operation.  This is an auto on feature that allows you to plug in your power tool right into the CT SYS dust extractor.  You simply plug your power tool into the extractor and connect the vacuum hose into the dust port.  When you depress the power tool trigger, the vacuum will turn on by itself when it’s in auto mode or you can use the manual on/off switch.  This feature worked great when I had minimal cuts to do so that I could just cut inside the house. It’s very convenient and more efficient not having to be outside in the rain, snow or cold weather.  Now I can grab my power tool in one hand and in the other hand grab the CT SYS dust extractor.

I’ve been able to leave the midsize or bulkier vacuums at home because of the features and suction power this extractor provides.  And with its 16.5′ long power cord the need for an extension cord has been eliminated.

Festool CT SYS Vac 022

Systainer Love

I love how this dust extractor can be integrated to stack with the Festool Systainer.  I have the CT SYS stacked with my cleaning products so it’s just one trip into the job site at the end of the day to tidy up.  To make this even better, I have my systainers connected to the Festool SysRoll Systainers and Storage Dolly.  Now everything can just roll onto the job site.  It’s organized and has a clean professional look. And fewer trips to the truck will increase your working time on site.  Festool is a complete system from the systainers, to their power tools, and their accessories.  The CT SYS dust extractor is a great addition to your Festool system or perfect as a standalone vacuum. Festool CT SYS Vac 035

The Dust Bag

The filter bag lasted longer than expected.  It is only 0.9 gal and has been on multiple sites handling many different materials from vacuuming drywall dust to saw dust with no issues. The suction power is impressive from this compact vacuum and it was able to extract chunks of drywall and even sucked up a 3 1/8″ multipurpose screw.  The bag can be replaced very quickly and easily.  The HEPA filter is also easily replaceable.  It is held in by one green button so when it’s time to inspect the filter it’s easily accessible.

Suggested Improvements

One improvement that was found during the review was the time it takes to properly coil and stow the power cord and the vacuum hose.  Both are meant to be stored in the top caddy. If the caddy was even 2″ taller then the hose could wrap around the outer walls and you could place the power cord in the middle around the carry handle. Other than that, this dust extractor is a well throughout tool with great features.

Final Thoughts – Festool CT SYS

Overall we were very impressed by the Festool CT SYS dust extractor.  The power, portability, compact size, HEPA and tool trigger operation are just some of the features that made this dust extractor spot on.  Being able to catch the dust at its source offering a virtually dust free project is priceless.  You can cut material and work inside a client’s house increasing efficiency by reducing walking back outside.  This extractor works great for all kinds of tasks from punch list work, daily job site cleanup or simply just chores around the house.

Performance and Innovation

Bosch 3931A-PB Cartridge FilterThe new 3931A-PB isn’t your dad’s old “shop-vac” folks! Jobsite/shop vacuums have transformed into serious pieces of construction equipment built to withstand the rigors of tough jobsite use. Several key features on this new unit really impressed me including; Pulse-Clean™, Power Tool Activation and the Power Broker™ Dial.

Pulse-Clean™

Once again I want to beat my head off the wall and wonder to myself why I didn’t think of “that”. The engineers at Bosch have solved one of my pet peeves  and that’s how to deal with filters that clog up faster than you can get work done.

The new Pulse-Clean™ feature does something that each and everyone of us has done 100’s of times. It automatically shakes the filters so the fine dust particles can fall to the bottom of the barrel. Seriously, how many times have I removed the filter from my shop vac, banged it on the side of a trash barrel just to get the extra dust off the filter? This new feature does that automatically for you and allows you to work much longer with a vacuum that has much better suction.

Power Tool Activation

The power tool activation feature is something that has become standard equipment on better vacuums. This is a must have feature for contractors that work in sensitive areas where dust control is critical. What I like most on this model is how they have coordinated the power tool activation with the other two features; Pulse-Clean™ and Power Broker™ Dial. The total integration of all three features puts this vacuum on a very high pedestal.

Bosch 3931A-PB Vacuum full of dust

Power Broker™ Dial

This new feature is pretty darn cool as well. Anyone that does remodeling for a living has no doubt run into power issues when working in older buildings. It’s not at all uncommon to plug in a saw attached to a vacuum for dust control. It’s also not uncommon when the two are turned on at once for the circuit breaker to pop. Obviously a high draw of amps from both the saw and vacuum on startup can easily overload a full circuit.

To combat this Bosch developed the Power Broker™ Dial. Essentially this allows you to distribute the power between the power tool and the vacuum so that you do not over load the circuit. This is a huge benefit for remodelers and contractors working with limited power sources.

Generous Features

In addition to the innovative features mentioned above the 3931A-PB offers many very generous features including:

  • Long, Heavy-Duty Cord – This vacuum includes a heavy-duty power cord that’s 26 feet long! Now that’s a vacuum you can pull around the jobsite without hunting down a long extension cord.
  • Large Wheels – The rear wheels are large and stable. This combined with a low center of gravity on the unit means this vacuum doesn’t have a tendency to tip over like some of the other brands on the market.

Bosch 3931A-PB Vacuum Wheels

  • Low Point Drain – This vacuum has a low point drain at the rear of the container for emptying liquids. This is a great feature considering how heavy the container can be when it’s full of water after using the wet feature.
  • Removable Cart Handle – I really like the removable handle that comes with the vacuum. It allows you to push the vacuum around without bending over or pulling with the hose.
  • Hose – Last but certainly not least is the actual vacuum hose. It’s a high quality plastic hose that won’t kink, yet it’s very flexible and easy to coil up. Much nicer than the hard plastic hoses I’m used to.

Final Thoughts

The Bosch 3931A-PB is an impressive jobsite vacuum! The engineers at Bosch really hit a homerun with a combination of innovation and performance. Time is money in construction so having a vacuum that keeps working at a high level longer, while acclimating to jobsite conditions (power), will only help contractors be more efficient and ultimately more profitable. I honestly can’t think of anything that I’d change other than I wish the accessories came with it as standard equipment.

Think about your worst case construction related dust.   Immediately drywall and concrete dust comes to mind.

My issue with these two types of dust is that anything short of a respirator doesn’t work and the dust get everywhere.  Now picture trying to do a retrofit or rehab in an occupied home or commercial building or worst … a hospital.  Oh yea and what about the EPA’s Renovations, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule – that’s a complete headache too.

Ok you get the picture!

The DWV012 Dust Extractor Vacuum was designed specifically to provide dust control solutions for drywall sanding and concrete grinding, cutting and drilling applications and to help prevent the risk of inhaling dust, and expensive dust clean ups.

What’s so Sexy About the DWV012?

The DWV012 is a tool activated vacuum and has continuous auto filter cleaning, which means that every 30 seconds one of the filters is back-flushed with air to remove dust to provide suction until the tank is full. The HEPA filters need to be replaced every 6 months under normal applications.DEWALT HEPA Filter Dust Extractor Vacuum and Universal Connector System

DWV012 Features:

  • Automatic Filter Clean pulses every 30 seconds for continuous operations without stopping to clean filter
  • Powerful 15-Amp motor delivers 140 CFM of airflow for maximum suction
  • Power Tool Actuation controls the On/Off operations of the vacuum with a power tool
  • Variable Suction controls vacuum’s power consumption and amount of suction
  • Telescoping handle for easy transport

Universal Connector:

Included with the vacuum is the DWV9000 universal connector which features nine individual adaptors that work with many of the grinding, drilling, chipping and demolition power tools currently on the market.

For grinding and hammer shrouds the universal connector has a positive lock and allows the hose to swivel.

The DEWALT HEPA Filter Dust Extractor Vacuum sells online here  Dewalt-DWV012-10-Gallon-Extractor-Automatic for  for $499.00.  The universal adapter is about $20.00
