Tool Box Buzz recently tested out the Milwaukee M12 Laser Level, Model 3624 Kit. This laser is a green cross-line 4-point level designed for Milwaukee’s target audience of Jobsite Professionals. This Laser Level comes as a bare tool (3624-20) or as a kit (3624-21). We tested out the kit which included the laser, a single 3Ah M12 battery, Combo M12/M18 rapid battery charger, and a laser alignment jig. It all came in a rugged hard case with a molded foam insert. We put it to work adding some conduit to the Rusty Boards Handcrafted Furniture workshop. We also tested it out under a variety of lighting and mounting conditions and positions. So let’s get into the details!

Overall Performance & Operation

The Milwaukee M12 Laser Level, Model 3624, matched every expectation we had. It uses bright green diodes to produce an easily visible straight line or line + plumb dot, even in bright sunlight. It’s easy to switch between modes with the rubber over-molded “mode” button. It features 3 modes which are:

  • Horizontal Level Line (X Axis) + Horizontal Points
  • Vertical Level Line (Y axis) + Vertical (Plumb) Points
  • Both  X+Y Axis and X + Y points

One of the potential features Milwaukee could include in future versions of this level would be a fourth mode with just the points on. This would allow the operator to use the level as a plumb without potentially flashing unnecessary laser light. It would make the plumb dot even easier to see (although it’s still pretty easy as shown in the pic below) and would also likely increase the battery life by a decent amount.

Whether in vertical or horizontal mode (or combo as pictured below), alignment was very easy. When using as a level, the pendulum should be unlocked. In 4 seconds or less the unit will self-adjust. As with all vertical (plumb) lines the pendulum is gravity functioning and the horizontal line is mirror-based to be pedicular to the vertical orientation.

But what if you want to use the Milwaukee M12 Laser Level, Model 3624, as a straight line instead? As with all pendulum-based laser levels, you need to lock the pendulum into place to prevent unintentional jarring, mis-calibrating, or damage. The Laser has separate on switch settings to eliminate the pendulum locking as a separate (and potentially risky) step.

And once locked into place, the level can be easily tilted and used as a straight line for any angled installs (like stair stringers or hand railings) you may need it for. We used it to make some adjustments when reinstalling a handrail in a Cape Cod detached garage attic.

Key Design Features

Storage and Transportation

The included hard case with molded foam insert is Milwaukee standard. And that’s extra important with a precision laser because, as previously mentioned, you don’t want to jostle any precision equipment with fragile parts. It’s nice that Milwaukee included space for the charger, battery, and alignment plate as well.

There is additional space for pieces that don’t some with the kit too. Milwaukee should add a picture outlining options for this additional accessory expansion in the documentation slot molded in the top cover of the case.

Adjustability & Mounting Options

There are 2 key features to point out when it comes to getting the laser where you need it to be. The first is the pivot-on-point micro adjustment knob. It’s located at the front left corner of the tool in easy reach. It allows you the swivel the laser left or right on the integrated base versus having to make the adjustments to your tripod. There is no fine adjustment option for the horizontal line however. The adjustment knob worked as advertised and felt snug with zero play or wiggle which is always appreciated.

The Milwaukee M12 Laser Level, Model 3624 also features the 2 most common mounting thread sizes – 1/4 – 20 & 5/8-11. We put the laser on a standard telescoping tripod with 1/4 – 20 attachment hardware dozens of times with no issues. It was centrally located on the base and felt well balanced and extremely secure once attached.

There are 2 other methods of mounting this laser and both are featured on the back plate; rare earth magnets and a hardware hanging slot. The magnets are extremely strong. We had no issues with beam creep once the laser was secured to a metal stud or Unistrut. We are able to use the micro adjustment knob with no issues while magnet-secured too. That’s an issue that has cropped up with some other laser levels/lines!

IP Protection

The Milwaukee M12 Laser Level, Model 3624-21, is IP54 rated. What does this really mean? Let’s break it down. Rob, explains it like this:

The IP Code or International Protection Rating consists of the letters IP followed by two digits. It classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects, dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures.

The standard was designed to provide users with more detail on the product’s durability in the elements.

  • The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects
  • The second digit represents protection against the ingress of liquids

The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection. For example a rating of IP54 means:

  • 5 = Limited protection against dust ingress
  • 4 = Protected against splash water from any direction

Class 2 Lasers

This laser is listed as a Class 2 laser. Lasers are classified for safety purposes based on their potential for causing injury to humans’ eyes and skin.

Class 2 lasers’ output power is below 1 milliwatt and emit visible light only. Lasers in this rating normally would not harm an eye unless a person deliberately stared into the beam. Laser protective eye-wear is normally not necessary and it is not a skin or materials burn hazard, which is a plus on a job site with a lot of flammable combustibles around.

Final Thoughts & Impressions

The Milwaukee M12 Laser Level kit, Model 3624-21, is an impressive kit to say the least. It’s a well-designed, high-performance green cross line 4-point level that builds on Milwaukee’s already impressive M12 lineup. At $549 this is not an inexpensive investment but it’s also not cheap quality. You get what you pay for. And if you’re a PRO builder who needs a full-feature laser level then this may be a very wise investment. If the price is a bit high and you don’t need 4 points… or an M12-powered laser but still want a high-end Milwaukee laser you should check out some of the previously released models here. But if you want the most current M12 laser and or need 4 points and cross lines then look no further!

Trigjig Fixed Rafter Square Review – Model RSA7

Trigjig RSA7 Fixed Rafter Square

5/5
Manufacturer: Trigjig
Model number: RSA7
Price: $159.00
Rafter squares come in a variety of styles, but there are only a few (two that we are aware of) that have fixed levels connected. With the help of these squares, you may make your work plumb and/or level in addition to marking lines at different angles.

The UK is where Trigjig tools are designed and made. The primary focus of Trigjig is on hand instruments for precise marking and measuring. These tools have been precisely CNC-cut from the best materials available. Trigjig places a strong emphasis on the requirement to produce tools that are cutting-edge, precise, actually useful, and the best available.

RSA7 Features

  • 7-inch rule
  • CNC deep engraved protractor gauge
  • Scribe lines every 1/4 inch
  • 1/3rd scribe marks for common timber widths
  • Parallel slots
  • Rise per foot of the run table
  • Rafter length per foot of the run table

European Aluminum

The Trigjig Rafter Square is constructed from 4MM thick European T6 aluminum. The term T6 aluminum refers to the hardness or temper that is produced by precipitation hardening. This grade is heat treatable and has a strong strength-to-weight ratio. It is utilized for engineering and structural applications, boats, furniture, and more because of its excellent formability and weldability.

Trijig’s rafter squares are all CNC-machined to extremely precise specifications. Along their whole 7″ length, they have a right angle precision of +/- 0.008° as well.

Trigjig RSA 7 Rafter Square On the Job

We’ve had the RSA7 on the job site for several weeks and have been extremely impressed with it. These squares are great for quick and simple marking of studs when framing in a basement and other carpentry tasks, made simpler and quicker thanks to a handy spirit level vial in the fence.

Other Notables

This rafter square’s anti-glare coated finish prevents marks from becoming difficult to read in the sun. Recessed markings on the laser-marked ruler are deeply engraved to reduce wear and tear when you pull it out and place it in your tool bag.

Silver anodized aluminum two-piece fence fastened to tool with machine bolts made of stainless steel. It has a 40mm spirit level with a sensitivity of 0.5° that is visible from all four sides.

Conclusion

Trigjig’s production practices, quality, and workmanship are incomparable and really are on another level when compared to mass-produced, laser-cut, or cast rafter squares. The RSA7 Fixed is made to a very high standard and is intended for craftsmen who want the best possible quality, design, and longevity from their equipment. The RSA7 will run you roughly $159.00. This square is definitely TBB recommended.

OX Tools Tradesman Level Series

OX Tool Tradesman Level Series

4.5/5
Manufacturer: OX Tools
Model number: Tradesman Level Series
Back in 2016 the crew of Tool Box Buzz ran a Head to Head on the Best Construction Level. We had 4 industry-leading brands in that H2H. Fast forward to 2022 we are still seeking out the best of the best when it comes to precision levels. OX Tools recently sent us out their Tradesman Level Series levels to test and evaluate. While we are not putting these levels through the same testing we did in the shop during our head-to-head, we are putting these levels to the test out on the job site.

OX Tool has been supplying the general construction, masonry, and tiling sectors with high-quality professional equipment since 1974. Their company has constantly developed as a result of the high quality of their products and their continuous commitment to providing excellent service to us, the consumer. OX Tools is continually studying and releasing new materials, new features to improve their line of tools to make the professional contractor’s job a little easier by listening to the individuals who use their products on a daily basis.

Level Line Up

We were sent the 24″, 48″, 72″ and 96″ for review however the OX Tool Tradesman Level Series levels come in the following sizes:

  • 24″ / 600 mm
  • 36″/  900 mm
  • 48″ / 1200 mm
  • 72″ / 1800 mm
  • 78″ / 1950 mm
  • 96″ / 2400 mm

2′, 4′, 6′ and 8′ during a mudroom renovation

First Impressions

First impressions count, and the OX Tools Tradesman Levels made a strong first impression on us. The quality of the materials, weight, and longevity are all factors we consider while making first impressions. The light blue pain, comfortable hand holes, and high-quality vials on both sides and in the middle of these levels wowed us. OX Tool also includes shock-absorbing end caps that protect the level against accidental drops.

Lightweight but built to last

These Tradesman Levels are really light weighing in as follows:

  • 24″ – 1.9Lbs
  • 48″ – 2.9Lbs
  • 72″ – 5.0Lbs
  • 96″ – 4.0Lbs

Vials and Accuracy

Vials

One of the key features of a good level is the visibility and readability of the vials. These levels use a traditional yellow color in the level vial and this color is the most common and easily read in lower lit circumstances. The magnified vials make them simpler to read, and each vial is individually calibrated and has a lifetime warranty.

Accuracy

In our opinion accuracy is the most important feature on any level. Ox Tools Tradesman Levels are made to be exceptionally accurate. They have vials with an accuracy of 0.0005″ over 1″ or.5mm over a meter.  During a mudroom renovation, we used these levels while installing a board and batten style pattern on the walls.

Also, these levels were used to ensure the benchtop was nice and plumb as well as our corbels, which will hold up our custom shelf, were level across the top.

Carrying Case

OX Tool also has a nice carrying case that will hole their 2′, 4, and 6′ levels. It is model number OX-P027501. This padded case also has a shoulder strap and a strong grip handle for easy carrying. The 24″ and 48″ are secure in zippered pockets on one side and the 72″ secures in another zippered pouch on the opposite side.

Overall Impression

As remodeling contractors know, the level is our best friend.  Accuracy, durability, and longevity are big features we consider when selecting our levels. OX Tools gives us all three for a very affordable price. These levels will become our new finished carpentry levels and will remain nice and safe in their protective carrying case. TBBcrew recommended!

Stabila LD250 Bluetooth Laser Distance Measurer

Stabila LD250 Bluetooth Laser Distance Measurer

Manufacturer: Stabila
Model number: LD250 BT
Price: $133.00
Power source: AA batteries (2)
The modern alternative to the traditional tape measure is a laser distance measurer (LDM). You won’t need to rely on another person with a steady hand to conduct accurate measurements with the Stabila LD250 BT Laser Distance Measurer because LDMs can be handled by a single person across long distances.

A good laser measure can be a beneficial addition to the toolkit of a variety of professionals, including builders, contractors, architects, surveyors, tilers, kitchen fitters, flooring contractors, and many other professions that require precise measuring.

Sending a pulse of laser light to a designated target and then measuring the time it takes for the refection to return is how an LDM gets the most accurate measurements. This enables incredible precise readings, even at long distances.

Stablia LD250 Features

  • Compact, easy-to-use laser.
  • Integrated Bluetooth® Smart 4.0 technology for the wireless transfer of measurement data from the laser to a smartphone or tablet.
  • Free STABILA Measures app lets you transfer measurements directly to photos of the building site or drawings.
  • 4 basic measuring functions: length, area, volume and continuous measurement.
  • Calculates measuring results quickly.
  • The large digits and display lighting make it very easy to read.
  • Impact-resistant housing with shock-absorbent STABILA soft grip casing.
  • ISO-certified distance measurer – the measuring range (0.2–50 m) and accuracy specifications (± 2.0 mm) fulfill international standard ISO 16331-1.
  • Protection class IP 54: protection against dust deposits inside and against spray from all directions.

Stabila LD250 – Trusted By Professionals

The crew of Tool Box Buzz has been using Stabila products for a long time. We’ve written many reviews on a vast majority of these products (check them out here). Stabila is an industry leader and one that is trusted amongst many professionals.

The Stabila LD250 BT Laser Distance Measurer replaces an older Hammerhead LDM I have been using since October 2014! This LDM is much beefier than my previous LDM. The LD250 is definitely more rugged and appears as though would take a lot more of a beating than the HH LDM.

Stabila LD250 BT On the Jobsite

There are many times I find myself reaching for an LDM. The Stabila LD250 was perfect for measuring SQFT in basement remodel. Using the free App StabilaMeasures, you can point and click and the measurements go right into your program.

As you click on each drawn line in the diagram you can point and click the LDM. The exact measurements will automatically load into the app. Once you make your way around the room each number saves giving you your total measurements.

Another use during this current basement remodel we are doing, was measuring for baseboard. The Stabila LD250 is super accurate. When measuring for baseboard cuts, I like to take my straight-cut measurements all at once. I find this way is time effective. Take all the measurements then cut them and install versus one at a time. This LDM was SPOT on. The exact measurement of all the distances and cuts was perfect.

The Benefits of Using Laser Distance Measures

The three main benefits to using a laser measure are:

  • Accuracy
  • Ease of use / Speed
  • Durability

These days, laser measurement accuracy is highly precise, especially when using a high-quality LDM like the Stabila LD250 BT. In fact, the entire range has a 1/16″ or less accuracy for distances of up to 100′.

As seen in the picture above, the Stabila LD250 was exactly measured at 4’9-5/16″. The LDM I had previously been using measured at 4’9-5/8″. That is a 5/16″ difference. While measuring square footage that is minimal but on trim cuts that is the difference between perfect or going to pick up another piece of trim.

The Stabila LD250 Laser measures are also well known for their extreme durability. The LDM has a minimum Water Protection IP Rating of IP54, protection against dust deposits inside and against spray from all directions. They are also built to withstand falls from height as well as strong vibrations from machinery.

Why LDM Are A Must

KCI Tools Squi.Jigs (1 1/4″ & 3″) and StealthMount Battery & Tool Mounts (DEWALT 20V and Milwaukee M18 & M12)

It’s easy to focus on the big-ticket items in the workshop or on the job site, but sometimes the right accessory and jig is really what makes all the difference. Recently I got the chance to test out a few accessories from KCI Tools: 2 different Squi.Jigs and an array of StealthMount battery and tool mounts. I’m always looking for better layout and storage solutions and these KCI products are made for those needs. I had the KCI Tools Squi.Jigs and StealthMounts installed in the workshop the same day they arrived and I wanted to highlight the nitch that both quickly filled.

Squi.Jigs | 1 1/4 inch & 3 inch

Time is money, and that is never truer than when on the clock. So we at Tool Box Buzz jump at any chance we get to save time while maintaining precision and accuracy when laying out measurements. Squi.Jigs offer those benefits at an extremely low cost. Squi.Jigs are aluminum thumbscrew accessories that mount on a framing square allowing you to quickly layout and mark measurements on the job site. They are easily adjustable and come in two sizes – 1 1/4 and 3 inches. They allow you to custom set a two-axis measurement using a framing square at a limitless number of settings. We found them most useful when laying out custom stringers as the height and depth of tread cutouts were a breeze.

And with the simple adjustment of the thumbscrews, they can easily convert to a right-angle straight edge capable of squaring up to any lumber or material you might need an alignment line quickly marked onto. Straight-line edge needed for concrete? Check. Drilling or alignment lines for steel reaming or erecting? Check. We found them to be rapidly adaptable and widely useful. They are also very light and easy to store.

Considerations & Recomendations:

We really only had a couple of minor things to consider pre-purchase:

  • Dedicated storage – as with any small and lightweight tool they are easy to lose so having a dedicated storage place for them is important
  • Surface Control – The 3″ (round) easily roll off a flat surface so we found the 1 1/4″ (hexagon) to be better for the simple fact they stayed in place. We’d love to see both sets of Squi.Jigs use the awesome hexagon shape!
  • Magnetic – The body of both Squi.Jigs are aluminum but the thumbscrews are not created equal. The 1 1/4″ thumbscrews are also aluminum so they aren’t receptive to magnetic. But the thumbscrews on the 3″ are made of steel so they are magnet-able (i.e. if you decide to hang them on a storage magnet bar). We recommend including an integrated magnet into the Squi.Jigs for improved functionality.
  • Alignment line? – If you are trying to line them up to a specific ruler mark on a framing square it is hard to see the ruler marks when fully recessed into the Squi.Jig. We recommend Squi.Jigs look into a recessed cutout alignment line to let you see the ruler marks and align accordingly
  • Visibility – The 3″ Squi.Jigs are easy to see because of the bright blue anodized finish. The 1 1/4″ Squi.Jg red finish tended to blend in with the tools and surfaces a bit more although it still looks great.

StealthMount | DEWALT & Milwaukee

Anytime we have the option to hang tools in a secure manner we appreciate it. It means a lower chance of accidental damage during transport or storage. And having storage options custom-designed to match the tools you use is the best option there is. StealthMounts fit the bill at a very reasonable cost.  Stealthmounts offer storage solutions for both tools and batteries for a variety of popular tool manufacturers (see lists below). I tested out the DEWALT (20V) and Milwaukee (M18 & M12) battery and tool holders. I found them to be very secure and easy to install and I especially liked the twist-lock feature on the M12 tool holder. The screw holes were nicely counter-sunk to allow for perfect clearance with standard countersunk screw heads. KCI Tools offers color-matched spacers to go with the mounts although I didn’t need any for a great install below my shop cabinets.

Tool Mount Options

  • DEWALT (18/20V)
  • Milwaukee (M18 & M12)
  • Makita (18V LXT)

Battery Mount Options

  • Bosch (18V)
  • DEWALT (20V)
  • EGO (Power +)
  • Festool (18V)
  • Makita (40V & 18V LXT)
  • Metabo HPT (18/36V)
  • Milwaukee (M18 & M12)
  • Ryobi (18V)

Final Thoughts | KCI Tools Squi.Jigs and StealthMount

KCI Tools offers some great accessories at some very reasonable prices. We were glad to test out both the KCI Tools Squi.Jigs and StealthMounts and easily found a permanent home for both in our workshop. They offer versatility and are designed to hold up over time. And while we’ve got some recommendations for the Squi.Jigs in particular (as usual), that shouldn’t dissuade anyone from grabbing a set as they are currently designed and putting them to quick use!

Milwaukee Rechargeable Green Lasers

Lasers have been one of the most requested new products for Milwaukee for a long time. Being late to the game they knew they had to up the ante and needed a way to differentiate and innovate in the space.

They focused on improving efficiency for layout and install applications and their goal was to eliminate performance pain-points by focusing on rechargeable solutions pushing all-day runtime and visibility w/ high-intensity green lasers.

Milwaukee Green Laser Lineup

Milwaukee has five new lasers which include

o   M12 Green 360º 3-Plane Laser and a
o   M12 Green Cross Line & Plumb Points Laser

and three lasers powered by REDLITHIUM™ USB

o   Green Cross Line & Plumb Points Laser,
o   Green Cross Line Laser
o   Green 3-Point Laser.

Laser lines take at 34-feet in a brightly lit room

Milwaukee Green Laser Light

Studies show that our eyes see green better than any other color in both day and night.  Red lasers are better visible in low light conditions but the human eye naturally detects green with ease, allowing it to appear brighter especially in daylight conditions.

Features and Durability

All these lasers feature micro-control adjustments that pivot on point delivering precise control and faster point to point alignment. This control is a nice feature and one that eliminates trying to fight to get your laser and measure point dialed-in and lined up.

The laser bases have rare earth magnets that provide a secure hold and ensure the laser won’t slide on steel studs or other metal material, allowing users to set up anywhere.

When lasers are being stored or in transit, it’s critical that the pendulum is locked to prevent damage.  The nice thing about these Milwaukee lasers is that the pendulum lock is tied to the on/off dial on the laser.  That means no more forgetting to lock the laser once you turn it off.

These lasers also have a locked and on mode which is great for installing stair railings or completing other applications that need to be straight but not necessarily level.

With the lasers in locked and on mode, you have the freedom to complete applications at any angle, but when you want to work in level or plumb, it’s best to have the laser unlocked and on so it will self-level.

IP Protection

All of these lasers are IP54 rated. Just what does that mean to you? The IP Code or International Protection Rating consists of the letters IP followed by two digits. It classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects, dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures.

The standard was designed to provide users with more detail on the product’s durability in the elements.

  • The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects
  • The second digit represents protection against the ingress of liquids.

The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection. For example a rating of IP54 means:

  • 5 = Limited protection against dust ingress.
  • 4= Protected against splash water from any direction.

Class 2 Lasers

All of these lasers are listed as a Class 2 laser.

My thoughts on the Milwaukee M12 vs USB Lasers

Milwaukee M12 Lasers

The M12 Green 360° 3-Plane Laser and Green Cross Line & Plumb Points Laser utilize M12 batteries, and users can expect 15+ hours of continuous run-time and use their M12 cordless tool batteries to achieve this.

M12 Lasers target existing M12 tool users and rechargeable 12v competition in the market. The laser is able to use all M12 batteries compatible up to a 6.0Ah.  Milwaukee’s main competitors include Dewalt, Bosch, Hilti, Makita, Spectra (line lasers)

Milwaukee USB Lasers

The USB Rechargeable Green Cross Line & Plumb Point Laser, Green Cross Line Laser, and Green 3-Point Laser are powered by REDLITHIUM™ USB,

One REDLITHIUM™ USB Battery is equivalent to the consumption of 6,000 alkaline batteries, eliminating the dependency on disposable batteries. Capable of being charged either in the product or in a separate charger. This eliminates the dependency on disposable batteries in applications that require extended use.

The RedLilthium USB lasers use battery technology to drive a strong, green laser for 8+ hours of runtime to get through a full day and the 3-Point Laser delivers 15+ hours.

One cool feature with the USB lasers is that you can charge or operate the laser with a charging cord attached to an M18 or M12 battery and USB plug.

With USB charging, Milwaukee is going after competitors that use alkaline batteries like Dewalt, PLS, Hilti, Bosch. Alkaline lasers struggle to achieve all-day runtime, especially with a green laser, so users are forced to choose between runtime (using a red laser) or visibility (using a green laser). But the struggle is real if you’re trying to achieve both performance expectations when using AA batteries.

Using the Milwaukee Green Laser

I use the cross line and 3-plane lasers the most, and mostly for plumb or level-line applications. Rarely do I need a 360 3-plane laser, but having that option is nice!

The lasers are easy to operate and adjust beautifully. The micro-adjustment knob is a super nice feature and one that’s been long overdue with small lasers. A mode button allows you to choose between plumb and level lines, or both.

I found the laser line to be bright and crisp. The longest distance I tested the lasers, so far, was 45 feet. The M12 laser distance has a working range up to 125’ and the USB is 100’. Both lasers have a rated accuracy of +/- 1/8” @ 33ft.

Milwaukee Green Laser Runtime

  • USB 3 point 3510-21: 15+ Hours
  • USB Cross Line 3521-21: 8+ Hours
  • USB Cross & Points 3522-21: 8+ Hours
  • M12 Cross & Points 3622-21: 15+ Hours Compatible w/ all M12 batteries – kitted w/ 3.0ah CP battery
  • M12 360° 3 Plane 3632-21: 15+ Hours Compatible w/ all M12 batteries – kitted w/ 4.0 XC battery

Price

Lasers aren’t cheap and Milwaukee is no exception.

  1. M12 Green 360º 3-Plane Laser Kit (3632-21) – $599
  2. M12 Green Cross Line & Plumb Points Laser Kit (3622-21) – $499 [Bare $399]
  3. USB REDLITHIUM™ Line & Points Laser Kit (3522-21) – $349
  4. USB REDLITHIUM™ Cross Line Laser Kit (3521-21) – $299
  5. USB REDLITHIUM™ 3 Point Laser Kit (3510-21 – $249)

Milwaukee Green Laser Accessories

Milwaukee is offering three laser accessories for all their lasers. While sold separately, at least they had the foresight to create storage space for them in the plastic molded cases. I was disappointed that do not offer a tri-pod or other mounting pole accessory. I currently use a Bosch telescoping pole system and a small camera tripod.

Milwaukee lasers

The three accessories are:

  1. Responsive Laser Alignment Target (48-35-1111) – $14.99
  2. 360° Laser Bracket (48-35-1311) – $59.99
  3. Track Clip (48-35-1313) – $24.99

The responsive laser target is complete with responsive centering alignment and high visibility illumination which easily directs users to the center of their target for the fastest, most visible alignment.

Accuracy: +/- 1/8” @ 33ft

The 360º Laser Bracket features multi-plane rotational adjustment for adaptable placement overhead or on other vertical or horizontal surfaces.  This allows you to set-up your laser on narrow material that is running horizontally and still maintains contact with all 4 magnets.  Think ductwork, metal decking, or piping.  It also can attach overhead and keep the laser upright so that it will still self-level. It also gives you a 3-inch up and down adjustment for dialing in the laser line.

The Track Clip is designed for a quick connection and secure hold on the wall angle and features rubber teeth and a low-profile head.

Why No Packet Case?

Currently the Milwaukee Green Lasers ship in red molded plastic cases. I’m disappointed that Milwaukee is not releasing these lasers in a PACKOUT. I’m sure they will in the future, but it seemed like a no-brainer to me to do it now.

Overall Thoughts on the  Milwaukee Green Laser

The Milwaukee rechargeable green lasers are a great new addition to their tool line.

While the USB laser option is certainly a rechargeable solution you have to use a setup like a phone charger to do it. I prefer less charging cords and as a result, my favorite laser style was the M12 battery laser. This is because I don’t want to deal with flimsy, cheap charging cords, and charging blocks. I’d rather charge the battery in a charger that’s also charging my tools on the job.

We found the green laser lines to be super bright and crisp.  They offer precise lines with high visibility for the professional user.

Robust, fast horizontal and vertical alignment of lines, easy to operate and precise self-leveling allow these lasers to be used both indoors and outdoors.

The bottom line, these Milwaukee Green Laser should give you years of reliable service.

M1 Caliber – Miter Saw Measuring Tool

One of the great things about running a tool review site is we get to see lots of new products before they hit the market. Recently the folks from REEKON Tools sent us a prototype of a new product that they are launching this month called the M1 Caliber. The M1 Caliber is a measuring tool designed to use with miter saws for fast measuring of stock material without the need for a tape measure and marking tool.

M1 Caliber – How it Works

The M1 Caliber is a fairly simple device that uses a spring loaded tensioning arm to put pressure on a digital measuring wheel. As the wheel rotates from sliding material under it towards the saw blade it, it records the linear distance. Before making any cuts the user must select the saw blade width (kerf) in the settings. This allows each cut to be adjusted for the specific blade width being used on the saw. Then, before measuring for a cut the device is “zeroed” with the wood against the saw blade teeth (or better yet by making a starting cut), the the user slides the material towards the saw blade until the digital read-0ut displays the length of the cut needed. You can learn more here.

Using the M1 Caliber

Setting up and using the M1 Caliber is extremely easy to do and well suited to fit a wide range of miter saws (including metal cut-off saws). The unit uses two AA batteries for power which are easily inserted into the right side of the unit. The unit attaches to the fence of a the miter saw with a spring loaded clamp that can easily be set using one hand and no tools. Next the spring loaded tension arm can be lowered down so the wheel touches the miter saw table.

Accuracy and Precision

The benefit of a tool like this is providing consistent accuracy and precision. That’s not to say you can do a great job with a tape measure, but this process can safe a lot of time and result in more accurate cuts as it eliminates both marking and visual errors associated with using a traditional tape measure or ruler when cutting at the miter saw.

I cut a variety of material in different lengths to see how accurate the cuts were and I was surprised at not only how accurate, but how repeatable the dimensions were. Above you can see I ran this piece of Oak through the M1 Caliber set to 6″ and cut the piece. Down below is the cut off piece and it measured 6″.

Where to Buy

Starting on June 16th the M1 Caliber will start a pre-order period. You can learn more about it here. The units will range from $139.99 and $149.99 once they go on sale, however during the presale they will be as low as $89.99.

Overall Impression – M1 Caliber

First let me say this is the first time we’ve published a review based entirely on using a prototype. Because it’s a prototype, we cannot comment on the fit and finish of the unit as the real production units will be much nicer than the one we evaluated. Having said that this review is based on the functionality of the prototype.

At first I was a bit skeptical about the need for this tool and what I’d use it for. But after using it around the shop I found myself enjoying the ability to quickly cut material to a specific length without needing my tape measure or a pencil. The unit is very easy to set up and extremely accurate.

It does have some limitations worth noting. It won’t work on really narrow material as the wheel is set off the fence about 3/4″.  Also, the unit needs flat smooth material otherwise the measurements may be off due to the rough or uneven surface.

With pricing well below $200 this is a good value for anyone looking for a more efficient and accurate way of measuring material on the miter saw.

Crescent Lufkin Upgrades Tape Measures

Control Series Tapes

Sparks, Md.—Crescent Lufkin® has launched the Control Series of tape measures, the next generation of tapes that combine a professional feel and finish with the innovations that tradespeople need. The new features are designed to help tackle issues that other tape measures can’t, helping users get the job done more efficiently.

“Innovation without quality is called a gimmick. Quality without innovation is called lazy. But when you have both, you raise expectations for what something should have always been,” said Kevin Fitzpatrick, product manager for Crescent Lufkin. “The Control Series builds on our long legacy of quality tapes by adding meaningful features that professionals appreciate. There’s nothing ‘gimmicky’ about these tapes.”

The 1-3/16” wide tape with extra-large print has 12 feet of standout, while the matte finish reduces glare and protects the blade, ensuring that it holds up through heavy use. The finger brake beneath the tape’s feed allows the user to control the blade without risk of pinching, and the blade can be locked in place with the wide lock button protected by over-mold rails.

Ergonomic, light-weight and compact, Control Series tapes are ideal for everyday use, and the 360-degree end hook is designed to grip material from all sides. The integrated tether point allows for easy tethering when working from taller heights. If it does fall, Control Series tapes are tough, surviving more than 50 one-story drops during real-life testing.

The Control Series offers eight options, including an engineers’ blade, two metric versions, and a version with Crescent Lufkin’s Nite Eye color scheme for greater legibility. For more information, visit www.crescenttool.com.

A high quality, rugged, and accurate spirit level is one of the most indispensable tools on most job sites. But these precision instruments also get the snot beat out of them. As a sitework contractor, it is common to see levels tossed in and out of toolboxes or truck beds. In order to be tradesman-proof, your box beam level better be tough! Keson is a company that gets this. This is my review of the Keson 48″ Box Beam Level Model LKB48. The rugged yet refined design and precision accuracy are very impressive!

Keson Industries

Keson Industries is a company that has been building high quality layout and line marking tools since 1968. They partnered with the European manufacturer SOLA to provide them with high quality components to build their levels. These construction levels are feature packed, durable, and affordable. Their lineup also includes digital levels, screed levels, and torpedo specialty levels. Keson’s construction level series is a mid-tier offering that is rugged and a great value.

Keson Box Beam Level Features:

  • Heavyweight Profile
  • Two Material End Caps
  • Single Measuring Surface
  • Tension-Wedge Vial Mounting
  • Greater Contrast
  • 20% Vial Magnification
  • Superior Anti-Static Vial Fluid

  • Anti-Shock Action
  • Magnetic Frame Rail

Kesson Box Beam Construction

The crew here at Tool Box Buzz took a look at some of the top offerings for Best Construction Levels Head to Head a couple years ago. The criteria the crew used to evaluate those levels, reads like the features list of the Keson. The body of the level has a solid box beam style construction that is heavy and rugged. The end caps are constructed from a sturdy rubber material that holds up well working around concrete structures. The rubber overmold is also included on the hand hold cutouts.

The under side of the Keson Construction level features magnets machined into the bottom rail of the beam. I found this to be great feature for storage, for instance securing the level inside of tool box body on a truck. If you work with steel often, then this is an excellent feature for you.

The vials of the Keson Construction Levels are probably my favorite feature. Three vials are built into the 48″ Box Beam Level. The housing offers a 20% magnification value and is incredibly easy to see and read in all conditions. The fluid in the vials is specifically designed to be anti-static, anti-shock, and extreme temperature resistant.

Keson’s vials are so clear and precise that they make quick leveling a breeze. Because of this attention to detail, the bubble in the Keson vials returns to shape quickly if you drop or bang the level. If that isn’t cool enough, Keson made the vials of the construction level series glow in the dark!

Keson Construction Level Accuracy

Well all this talk is not worth a darn if it isn’t accurate. Keson’s vials are rated for a maximum measurement tolerance of 0.0005 in./in. in the standard position. In the vertical position Keson rates the Construction Box Beam Level for 0.00075 in./in.

Keson’s Box Beam – Drop Test

It has to be able to withstand a fall right? Well to test this I threw it off a deck a I was working on a few times. This impromptu drop testing subject the Keson level to an approximately 14′ drop. I repeated the test four times and observed no damage to the level. I checked accuracy on an existing post prior to the test, as well as afterwards. The Keson Construction Level held true!

Kesson Rugged Reliability

Price and Availability

The Keson Box Beam Construction level series is currently available along with all other styles in the series. Currently the 48″ model that I reviewed is available for $78.99 from our friends at Acme Tools. That is a great price for a rugged mid-range level with great features!

Who Did Keson Build This for?

The construction series of levels is what Keson describes as their Mid-Tier offering. This tool is perfect for the framing contractor, site work contractor, or anyone in the construction industry that demands a high performance and accurate tool at an affordable price.

Overall Impressions:

Keson is manufacturing high quality and reliable levels with their family of box beam levels. The 48″ construction level I am using continues to impress me. It had solid construction, clear and precise vials, and is very affordable! The only critique is that no protective case or sleeve is included with the level. Keson could help end users prolong the external wear of the tool by including a case or bag with it.

The foundation of the construction industry is accurate and precise work done by skilled workers. Keson is offering tools to workers of any trade that will make your work more accurate, while giving a better finished product, and not breaking the bank while doing it. Check out the box beam construction levels from Keson and you will not be left out of whack!
