Milwaukee M18 15mm Random Orbital Polisher Kit Review (Model# 2684-22HD)

Milwaukee M18 Random Orbital Polisher

4/5
Manufacturer: Milwaukee
Model number: 2684-22HD
Price: 529.00
Power source: M18 Battery
Motor size: Brushless
Weight: 5.16
Here in the Northeast, Summer has sprung. That means the race is on to polish those boats before they go back into the water. Also, it’s a great time to get that winter grime off of your vehicle. With that being said, we figured this would present an excellent opportunity to do some testing with the Milwaukee M18 Random Orbital Polisher Kit that was sent to us for review. A random orbital polisher is a dual-action polisher which makes it safer to use than a standard rotary polisher. Random Orbital Polishers are usually the preferred polisher by home users and professional detailers because they do an excellent job, and also reduce the risk of burning the paint or clear coat.

This kit comes complete with a carrying case, two Milwaukee M18 6.0AH batteries, and a rapid charger.  Our initial thoughts were that the Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher was very comfortable to hold, and also very strong in the power department. In this review, we will cover the features of this polisher, report back on the battery life, and test the Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher in many different applications by myself and in the hands of a professional detailer.

Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher Specifications

  • Battery Platform: M18 FUEL
  • Motor Type: Brushless Motor
  • Length: 17.26″
  • Weight: 5.16 Lbs
  • Warranty: 3 Year
  • Head Size: 5″
  • Speed Settings: 8
  • RPM Range: 2,650 to 5,100

Carrying case

Like most Milwaukee products, the Milwaukee M18 15mm Random Orbital Polisher Kit includes a carrying case. I find the carrying cases that Milwaukee includes handy for tool organization and shelf storage. I keep most of my polishing pads and chemicals in this carrying case when not in use.

Rubber Grips

The Milwaukee M18 15mm Random Orbital Polisher is extremely comfortable to hold. The front and rear handles are molded with a soft and durable rubber grip. The rubber grips have a molded diamond shape pattern to improve hand grip. I used this tool to polish two cars, a boat, car headlights, and plastic Jeep windows. One of the best features of this tool was how comfortable it was to hold.

Weight/Length

With the M18 6.0 Ah battery attached, the Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher weighs in at 7.13 pounds and 19.5″ in length. I found the weight and length of this polisher to be on par with most other battery-powered polishers. Naturally, a battery-powered polisher will be a little heavier and a little longer than a corded tool due to the added battery. A battery-powered polisher is a high-demand tool. Therefore, the included 6.0 Ah battery hits the sweet spot between not making the tool too heavy and having enough battery to last a reasonable amount of time while polishing.

Battery Life

Battery life is one of the most common questions regarding almost any cordless power tool. While polishing I often take small breaks, adding more product, taking a sip of water, or wiping my work area. With these small breaks in polishing, I found that one battery lasted me a little over 50 minutes. Additionally, I also tested the polisher and NEVER let the tool shut off. The trigger lock was engaged and I ran the polisher at 3700 RPM until the 6.0-ah battery died. In this setting, The Milwaukee M18 Polisher lasted exactly 44 minutes and 36 seconds. I think that is a pretty good amount of continuous time from one 6.0-ah battery.

I typically do most of my polishing in my garage or driveway. Having two fully charged batteries will get me through most jobs. If additional batteries are needed the rapid charger will charge the batteries fairly quickly. I also tested a completely drained battery and the rapid charger charged the 6.0-ah battery in exactly 56 minutes. It should be noted that while using the tool at a higher speed, the Milwaukee Polisher performed at 100 percent power right until the battery was getting close to depletion. It then had a slight loss of power. This loss of power was beneficial to me because it gave me a heads-up that the battery was getting low but still allowed me to finish the area I was working in. However, when I tested at mid-speed (3700 RPM), the Polisher shut off when the battery died.

Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher Power

The Milwaukee M18 Random Orbital Polisher is no slouch in the power department. As I previously mentioned, this polisher provided corded-level power the entire time it was used until battery depletion. The strong Milwaukee polisher has 8 speeds to choose from, ranging from 2,650 to 5,100 RPM, which can be selected by the easy-to-read dial on the top of the tool. The placement of the speed selector is in a good location on the top of the tool and it was not in the way while using this polisher. The trigger lock is also placed comfortably and can easily pushed in to keep the polisher on without having to hold the trigger.

The Milwaukee Polisher did not stall during normal use. I had to apply heavy pressure to get the polisher to stop spinning, but it was still not completely stalled out. The amount of pressure that I used is not needed for normal polishing. This confirmed how powerful the Milwaukee Polisher is.

Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher – Professional Use

Although I am pretty skilled when it comes to keeping my toys polished, I also put this tool into the hands of a true professional polisher. I loaned the Milwaukee M18 Random Orbital Polisher to Matt at MaxSport Auto Detailing here in CT. Matt is a professional detailer who offers expert detailing services, and I must say that he does an excellent job. In addition, he was already familiar with this Milwaukee polisher as he had already owned it.

Matt told me that the Milwaukee Polisher is not his first choice as he typically uses a corded high-end professional polisher. However, Matt did provide feedback from a pro perspective. Matt was quick to say that although this may not be a high-end polisher, it is a very solid polisher at a reasonable price point (much less than his professional polisher). Matt explained that he often uses the Milwaukee Polisher when he is in a situation where he needs to be cordless. Although Matt already owned this polisher, he still tested it out for the day to refresh his memory.

Professional Opinion

While Matt tested the Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher he had plenty of “pro” opinions to offer. First Matt commented that the Milwaukee Polisher was a little heavy. When polishing all day long every ounce counts and can certainly take its toll on the body. Matt also felt that the length of the Milwaukee Polisher was a little long. He believes that a shorter polisher would allow him more maneuverability when polishing vehicles like a Lexus that has a lot of angles.  However, he noted that weight and length are user preferences. Although these were some key points, it’s important to remember that when using a battery-powered polisher, naturally there will be a little extra length and weight due to the added battery.

Milwaukee M18 Random Orbital Polisher Review

Professional Insight

Matt also liked that soft grip of the Milwaukee Polisher more than his professional polisher, and he commented that the polisher had really good power with 2-5 lbs of pressure applied. The biggest thing that was brought to my attention was that the motor of the Milwaukee Polisher polisher was slightly unstable or unbalanced on startup. This meant that each time the polisher was started, it wobbled slightly on the vehicle surface until it reached polishing speed. The professional polisher that was also on site had no wobble on startup.  I was able to take the 5″ backing plate off to check the motor and bearing system. Everything was tight, and there were no adjustments that could be made. I didn’t notice this wobble until Matt pointed it out, but this may be something on the radar of a pro.

Matt concluded by saying that he prefers his corded professional polisher. However, there are certain jobs in which he has to break out the cordless Milwaukee Polisher. Although the Milwaukee Polisher may not meet the expert level, Matt said that if it was all he had to use he would have no problem making a living using the Milwaukee Polisher. Matt’s opinions are that the Milwaukee Polisher is great for homeowners up to professional car detailers who are just starting. We also agreed that it would appeal to people already on the Milwaukee M18 battery system.

Final Thoughts on the Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher

The Milwaukee M18 Random Orbital Polisher is a dual-action polisher. Dual-action polishers are safer to use than standard rotary polishers. It is comfortable to hold and has strong power like a corded polisher. Each M18 6.0 AH battery will last about 45 minutes. If you purchase the kit you will have a second battery to keep on the charger ready to go.  After testing the Milwaukee polisher on several different applications and putting it in the hands of a professional detailer, we agreed that this is a solid polisher for many different levels of use.

Buy it now

The Milwaukee M18 15mm Random Orbital Polisher Kit can be purchased as a kit and comes complete with a carrying case, Two Milwaukee M18 6.0AH batteries, and a rapid charger for $529. The Milwaukee polisher is priced similarly to other competitors on the same level. It should be noted that the Milwaukee Random Orbital Polisher is also offered as a tool only for $299.00. Buying as a tool-only can make the Milwauke polisher very affordable if you already have the M18 batteries. Additionally, the Milwaukee Polisher is also available in a 21mm version with a 6″ backing plate for $329.00. It should be noted that the 5″ & 6″backing plates are universal and can be switched between polishers. Backed by Milwaikees’ 3-year warranty, there isn’t much to worry about as far as longevity.

RIDGID will release their new 18” Brushless Drum Fan in February of 2024 and they sent us a sample to review. A RIDGID 18V battery or any standard extension cord can power the RIDGID Drum Fan. RIDGIDS’ new fan is extremely quiet and the brushless motor allows for longer run-times when battery-powered. The R860722B is available as a bare tool only, however it is compatible with all RIDGID 18V batteries.

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Weight: 26 LBS
  • Height: 26.5”

RIDGID 18V Brushless Hybrid 18” Drum Fan Overview

Once I picked up the RIDGID fan by the large, easy-grab handle, I immediately noticed the appealing construction. The front of the metal drum is lined with heavy-duty plastic to protect it from damage on the job site. The fan blades are also protected by a front metal grate.

RIDGID 18V Brushless Hybrid 18” Drum Fan

The feet have the same heavy-duty plastic which will keep the fan securely resting in place, whether placed on the ground or mounted to the wall.

Additionally, the legs have pre-drilled holes for easy wall mounting. This attachment method allows the fan to get up off the floor and provide airflow at any desirable height.

Extension cord storage tabs are molded into the legs for easy storage and organization.

The speed selector dial makes it easy to choose between the 6 available speed settings.

RIDGID 18V Brushless Hybrid 18” Drum Fan

Fan angle adjustments can be made easily by loosening the large turn knobs which allows the fan to angle freely.

RIDGID R860722B Battery testing

The RIDGID 18V Brushless Hybrid 18” Drum Fan has 6 speeds. Although this fan can be plugged into any extension cord, I was curious to see the run-time when powered by a battery. I used a RIDGID 12.0Ah battery for testing, although any RIDGID 18V battery can be used.

  • On speed 1 the fan ran for about 14 hours.
  • On speed 3 the fan ran for about 11 hours.
  • On speed 6 the fan ran for about 4 hours and 15 minutes.

The more blades a fan has, the more power it requires to spin. Also, having a brushless motor helps extend the battery time and fight the drag from having 5 blades. We all have different needs when using a fan. I consider speed 3 to be medium. Having a fan powered by battery power on a medium-speed setting for 11 hours is respectable.

RIDGID 18V Brushless Hybrid Drum Fan Decibel Testing

I also performed decibel testing to see how quiet the fan is. Testing was performed with a cell phone decibel testing app. The phone was placed 8 feet away from the fan, and directly in the fan’s path.

  • On speed 1 the fan registered 50 decibels.
  • On speed 2 the fan registered 53 decibels.
  • On speed 3 the fan registered 55 decibels
  • On speed 4 the fan registered 57 decibels
  • On speed 5 the fan registered 61 decibels
  • On speed 6 the fan registered 64 decibels.

The more blades a fan has, the quieter it usually is. At higher speeds, the decibel lever will increase slightly as expected. Therefore, the decibel range that this fan puts out is fairly quiet.

Impressions of the Ridgid Hybrid Drum Fan

In conclusion, the RIDGID 18V Brushless Hybrid 18” Drum Fan is a good fan and will be a solid purchase. This fan can powered by a battery or extension cord. RIDGIDS’ new fan is extremely quiet and the brushless motor allows for longer run times when battery-powered. As you can see by the testing performed, this fan has a good run time when powered by a 12-ah battery.

How to purchase

The RIDGID 18V Brushless Hybrid 18” Drum Fan can be purchased soon, directly from Home Depot for $199. While this price may be slightly more than other drum fans, I think it is worth it. RIDGID is known for its quality products as you can see in our other product reviews. In addition, RIDGID offers free parts, and free service for the life of this fan if you register this product.

GiRAFFE TOOLS Extension Cord & Air Hose Reel Review

50' Retractable Extension Cord Reel & 50' Self-Winding Air Hose

4/5
Manufacturer: GiRAFFE TOOLS
Model number: DE15-14AWG & AWA15
Price: $96.99 & $97.99

We have recently reviewed the GiRAFFE TOOLS wall-mounted pressure washer. GiRAFFE TOOLS seems to be gaining attention thanks to its heavy social media advertising for its automatic reeling tool systems. Since we had already dug into their pressure washer scene, we agreed to check out the GiRAFFE TOOLS Retractable Extension Cord Reel and Air Hose Reel. For this review, we covered the 50′ 14AWG extension cord retractable reel and the 50′ self-winding air hose reel. They have many different models of each item to choose from.

GiRAFFE TOOLS Retractable Extension Cord & Air Hose Reel Review

GiRAFFE TOOLS Extension Cord Reel (14AWG)

Retractable Extension Cord Reel Specifications

  • Model: DE15-14AWG
  • Size: 12.79″ x 10.94″ x 5.74″
  • Watt Limit: 120W
  • Voltage / Amps:  125V/10A
  • Leader Cord: 5′

Automatic Reel and Swiveling Mounting Plate

The GiRAFFE TOOLS, Retractable Extension Cord Reel has a built-in automatic reel which is very handy for the garage or shop. The reel feels very smooth and so far has worked properly. The mounting plate allows the Reel to swivel so the extension cord can be easily used in whichever direction is needed.

Additional Features

The GiRAFFE TOOLS, Retractable Extension Cord Reel includes a lighted Triple Tap Outlet showing that the plugs are powered. The cord stopper can be adjusted to your desired length. As a result, if mounting on the ceiling, this adjustable stopper will help you position the cord just right. In addition, there is a built-in, resettable circuit breaker for overload protection.

Self-Winding 50′ Air Hose Reel

GiRAFFE TOOLS Retractable Extension Cord & Air Hose Reel Review

Self-Winding 50′ Air Hose Reel Specifications

  • Model: AWA15

Automatic Reel and Swiveling Mounting Plate

The Giraffe Tools Self-Winding 50′ Air Hose Reel definitely has its role in keeping things easily accessible and neatly organized. As with the extension reel, simply pull the hose to the desired length for up to 50′ of lightweight hose. A slight tug will allow the reel to self-wind. The reel also is very smooth and self-winds nicely.

Additional Features

Below you will find close-up photographs. Pictured are the adjustable stopper and the self-layering guiding system which allows the hose to reel without binding. The hose is rated for up to 300 PSI and is a lightweight hose that I consider light-duty. The mounting system swivels 180 degrees, allowing the hose to extend to wherever you are working.

Final Thoughts / Buy it now

In conclusion, an auto reel system is excellent for quickly getting power or air where you need it, and quickly reeling it away when done.  The GiRAFFE TOOLS, Retractable Extension Cord, and Self-Winding Air Hose both work smoothly and seem to be of good quality. Each, including 50′ of retractable length, I think that they are a great addition to any garage or shop. The extension reel is priced at $96.99 and the self-winding Air Hose is priced at $97.99. Milwaukee has recently released their 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise and it is a must-have. It is incredibly sturdy with a large and well-designed deck. Set up and clean up are a breeze with the easy deployment system.  For easy storage, Milwaukee’s Tripod Vise also folds flat to fit in service trucks or job boxes.

Milwaukee 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise

Specifications

  • Pipe Capacity: 6”
  • Storage Depth: 5.25”
  • Storage Height: 49.5”
  • Level Adjustment: +/- 3 Degrees
  • Working Height: 36.5″
  • Total Weight: 49.8 Lbs

Milwaukee Tripod Chain Vise Deck

Surprisingly, the Milwaukee Vise Deck is made out of high-quality cast aluminum. When I saw this tripod vise released I just assumed the deck was going to be made from Milwaukee’s signature heavy-duty red plastic. Conversely, the aluminum deck makes for a strong and stable work area. The deck also has a large work surface measuring 20” x 15.5″. The beveled edge, notches, and cutouts are perfect for keeping your supplies and tools from rolling onto the ground and creates an organized workspace.

Milwaukee 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise

Milwaukee Tripod Deck Stabilizer Lock is a Key Feature

Milwaukee 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise

The deck stabilizer lock allows you to twist the stabilizer arm which increases the tension. As a result, this arm stabilizes the board completely. No matter how long you own this Tripod Vise this adjustment will always take out the slack and keep the vise tight and wiggle-free. We also found that we did not need a pipe stand as often due to the large deck and the stability that the Deck Stabilizer Lock provides.

Milwaukee 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise

“Look no feet” The Milwaukee Tripod Vise is so stable that once we tightened the Deck Stabilizer Lock, we could hang on the pipe without the vise wiggling or tipping.

Milwaukee Tripod Chain Vise is Quick to Setup and Breakdown

The Milwaukee Chain Vise deploys easily and folds up quickly. Once folded the vise folds flat, making for easy storage in your shop or truck.

Milwaukee 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise

Adjustable Leg

The adjustable leg will assist in easily leveling the board +/- 3 degrees.

Milwaukee 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise

Balanced Carry Handle

The carrying handle is perfectly balanced with the vise making it easy to carry in a straight position.

Foot Grips

The foot grips are made of soft but sturdy rubber. They can also be removed for anchoring.

Milwaukee 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise

Grounding Tab

The built-in grounding tab makes welding a little easier.

Room for Improvement

Although the large deck provides plenty of workspace, we wish that a lower shelf was included. A lower shelf is available as an accessory for another $99.00 at Acmetools.com. While having the option to purchase this shelf, later on, is nice, including the shelf in the original kit would make the chain vice nearly perfect.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, The Milwaukee Leveling Tripod Chain Vise is a good product with an excellent design.  The large deck allows for plenty of work space and organization. The Deck Stabilizer lock allows the Milwaukee Vise to get very tight, and sturdy, which should extend the service life of the tool.  The adjustable leg allows for quick angle adjustments, all while it deploys and cleans up quickly to save space.

Price and Availability

The Milwaukee Chain Vise is priced at $499.99 which is similar to other competitors. Considering, the large workspace and the quality craftsmanship behind the 6” Leveling Tripod Chain Vise, I think that choosing the Milwaukee is an easy decision to make. The Milwaukee Tripod Vise can be purchased from our friends at ACME Tools by clicking the link below.

In addition, the Milwaukee Chain Vise will pair perfectly with the full-size or compact Milwaukee Pipe Threader that we previously reviewed.

GiRAFFE TOOLS Wall Mounted Electric Pressure Washer PRO Review

Grandfalls Pressure Washer PRO

Grandfalls Pressure Washer PRO

Manufacturer: GiRAFFE TOOLS
Model number: PRO
Price: $599.00
Power source: 120V Electric
Motor size: 2500 PSI
Weight: 59.5
I’m going to start out by saying that I recently wrote an extensive review on the Standard (non-PRO) Grandfalls Pressure Washer here. I was impressed with the Standard model by Giraffe Tools. I have used it probably once a week for 4 months with no problems whatsoever. Having a pressure washer mounted to the wall is an excellent feature to have, and almost a showpiece for when I have people in my garage. Having a pressure washer that is ready to go without needing to be set up is a priceless time saver.

Simply, pull the hose and extend it up to 100 feet.  When done give the hose a slight tug for the auto reel to kick in and the hose begins to automatically rewind. Decent electric-type pressure and a foam canister are included. I have to admit that I use this all the time. I thoroughly appreciate its readiness and time-saving abilities. With that being said I was very interested to see what else the “PRO” model had to offer.

Specification

  • Model Number: PRO
  • Rated Voltage: 120V~60Hz
  • Motor: 13.5amp (1800w)
  • Max Water Inlet Temperature: 104 F/ 40C
  • Flow: 2.1GPM
  • Max Pressure: 2500 PSI
  • Hose Length: 100ft
  • Dimensions:  23.34″ x 19.17″ x 13.89″
  • Cord Length: 5’6″
  • Leader Hose: 6’6″

Grandfalls Pressure Washer PRO Pressure Hose

The PRO comes with an upgraded “ultra soft” high-pressure gray rubber hose. This hose is rubber-based and less rigid allowing for more flexibility and an easier automatic reel while being stiff enough to not kink. The Standard model comes with a more rigid PVC type of black hose. I personally didn’t have a problem with the Standard hose, but it feels slightly harder for the unit to auto-reel, which could affect how the automatic feature lasts in the long run. In addition, if washing high-end cars the softer hose may be better if it accidentally rubs against the paint.

Upgraded Leader Hose

On the left, you can see that the PRO comes with a thicker and more durable leader hose to connect your water source to the unit. The PRO comes with a 3/4″ leader while the Standard model comes with a 1/2″.

The PRO also comes with a much nicer foam canister. It is made of metal framing rather than plastic. It also has a long suction hose with a plastic screen to inject more soap and prevent any contamination. The tip of the PRO can also be adjusted on the fly to change the spray pattern of the foam. The PRO nozzle is definitely constructed better and shoots foam significantly thicker than the Standard model. If washing cars is your primary use for this pressure washer and you desire thicker foam this may be the deciding factor for you.

Upgraded Spray Gun fittings

The PRO spray gun is connected with a metal fitting rather than the plastic fitting that comes with the Standard model. I have not had any problems with the plastic version, but metal will always be stronger and provide less of a chance for failure.

Other PRO upgrades

The PRO is much quieter. GiRAFFE TOOLS reports that the PRO puts out about 80 decibels, while the Standard puts out 90 decibels. I can tell you that the PRO is significantly quieter. The PRO is also heavier weighing in at about 59.5 pounds compared to the Standard being 42 pounds. The PRO most likely has better internals as it is rated to last longer and is said to deliver 2500 PSI over the Standard 2200 PSI.

Grandfalls Pressure Washer PRO

Final thoughts

In conclusion, the PRO certainly has some extra features to offer over the Standard model. I think that the extra PSI, reduced noise, and better foam gun will make the PRO worth the extra investment. However, the Standard model is still a good unit that works fine and will accomplish almost as much as the PRO model. As mentioned in the previous article, this is not a gas-pressure washer, so expect pressure consistent with an electric unit.

Grandfalls Pressure Washer PRO

How to buy the Grandfalls Pressure Washer PRO

The Standard or PRO model can be purchased directly through the manufactures website. The PRO is listed at $599.99 while the Standard model is $309.79 with free shipping on either model. Therefore, no matter which model you select, I think you will be happy with the convenience of these wall-mounted pressure washers.

Milwaukee Switch Pack Sectional Drum Model 2775B-211 ReviewThe Milwaukee Switch Pack

M18 FUEL Switch Pack Sectional Drum System Kit

Manufacturer: Milwaukee
Model number: 2775B-211
Price: $889.00
Power source: 18v
Weight: 41.5
The Milwaukee Switch Pack Sectional Drum System is an excellent mobile system that makes it quick and easy to transport into residential jobs. The backpack feature really allows you to go mobile. Not only is it a time saver but it is also very convenient. The Milwaukee Switch Pack system is tool-free utilizing heavy-duty buckles that allow you to quickly change between drums. Multiple drums can be carried and quickly switched between for different size cable thicknesses. Additionally, drums can also be combined to reach up to 100′ in total. These features combined with the powerful brushless motor make this a great choice for most residential and commercial plumbers.

Specifications

  • Max cable length: 100′
  • Drain line capacity: 1-1/4″ – 4″
  • RPM spin speed: 250
  • Warranty: 5-year tool, 3-year battery, 2-year cable

Switch Pack Sectional Drum Options

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

The Milwaukee Switch Pack Sectional Drum System is a tool-free system that utilizes heavy-duty buckles which allow you to quickly change between drums. Additionally, the kit includes a drum with a 50′ cable. Therefore, multiple drums can be purchased with different size cables allowing easy switching between cable sizes in seconds depending on the job you are working on. The Milwaukee drums are fully enclosed to prevent any job site mess. If you purchase a second drum you can easily connect the two extending your reach to 100’. It’s also worth mentioning that all Milwaukee cables have rust guard protection.

The Milwaukee Switch Pack System is Portable

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

The quality that sparked our interest in the Milwaukee Switch Pack Sectional Drum System was by far the mobility. Being cordless, the Milwaukee Switch Pack Sectional Drum System could be thrown on your back and easily brought to the job site. Carrying the Milwaukee Switch Pack System upstairs, up a ladder, or into a tight space is no problem. I can tell you for certain that this system is a time saver, eliminating the need for two people to lug it into the house like our traditional Rigid unit. Therefore, it reduces the risk of damage to floors, carpets, and walls. Additionally, not having to run extension cords onto a roof or a crawl space is another great benefit of this cordless system.

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

Brushless Power, Braking, and Belt Drive

Milwaukee claims the Switch Pack has 5x faster braking and 2x more clog power than corded competitors. There was no lack of power for the many clogs we tested with this unit. We easily pushed through some serious grease that was clogged solid from a garbage disposal. The integrated drum brake stops this tool quickly, giving us more control while in use. In addition, the belt drive system is well-designed. When using our old Rigid unit the drive belt would often slip off the drum, especially when worn. The Milwaukee belt design is enclosed and attaches directly to a pulley on the drum. Locking onto the pulley leads me to believe it will be more reliable than the old Rigid system we have been using.

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

Electronic Foot Pedal

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

The electronic foot pedal is coated in non-slip rubber. Our older Rigid model uses an air valve-style pedal that would give us trouble and could leave a lot of room for failure. Being hard-wired this pedal system is more dependable and responsive than our old Rigid model giving us more control and the ability to go back and forth slowly while hand-feeding the cable. The pedal can also be neatly tucked away in the tool itself when in transport and the wire can be disconnected from the tool itself easily if needed.

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

M18 FUEL 5.0 Battery and charger

Included with this kit is one 5.0 Ah Red Lithium extended capacity battery pack, along with a charger that is capable of charging M12 and M18 batteries. During the testing process, we ran the cable through a good amount of pipe and even powered through a few actual clogs, without having to swap batteries. As a result, the battery will easily handle multiple clogs on a single charge.

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

On-Board Accessory Attachment and Storage

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

The Milwaukee M18 Fuel Switch Pack Sectional Drum System includes 4 different heads.  A key way is also included to change the heads easily or attach another cable. The heads neatly hang on the base of the tool. This feature allows you to keep all of the heads together. Therefore,  you can select the desired head you need when you evaluate what you are working with.

The Milwaukee Switch Pack

Room For Improvement

The fact that all of the heads can be easily secured onto the base of the tool is a nice feature. However, I found the metal retainer arm to be a little flimsy. Before we figured out how it worked we bent one of the metal retainers right off the bat. We tried to bend it back and get it functioning correctly without success. This is not a deal breaker, and once you learn how to access the heads, you shouldn’t have any problems. I would recommend that Milwaukee improve upon or beef up this retaining clip in the future.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, The Milwaukee Switch Pack Sectional Drum System is an extremely mobile system that is easy to carry. It can be strapped onto your back and quickly brought into the job site with everything you need. The backpack feature eliminates the need to have two people drag a heavy unit into a house and risk causing damage. Quickly change between drums without the need for tools. Multiple drums can be carried and quickly switched between. Additionally, drums can also be combined to reach up to 100′ in total. All these features combined make this an easy decision for plumbers.

Buy It Now

Priced at $889.00 I believe that this is a good investment for most plumbers. Undoubtedly, this tool will not only save you time but its mobility will help prevent unwanted damage when going to residential homes. Backed by Milwaukee’s 5-year warranty on the tool there isn’t much to worry about when making this investment. We will also be considering the Milwaukee switch pack cable drive accessory which allows the cable to be automatically fed and retracted, instead of hand feeding.

The Milwaukee M18 Compact Pipe Threader Model 2870-22 may be portable due to its compact size, however, it packs more than enough power to get the job done. The tool itself, weighing in at just 10.62 pounds is the lightest cordless pipe threader currently on the market. Milwaukee paired this ultra-light pipe threader with their own branded Milwaukee die heads that are the industry’s lightest die heads made of military-grade aluminum. The two combined make this the perfect lightweight kit for use by mobile service contractors or for light-duty construction projects where you will be threading 1/2″ to 1-1/4″ pipe.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader Carrying Case

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Personally, I am a fan of Milwaukee’s carrying cases.  The Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader comes with a hard case that helps to keep the kit neatly organized. It brings everything you need to thread pipe easily into the job site. The threader, 2 batteries, charger, and the included 4 die heads also fit securely in the case. The entire package weighs in at 40 pounds, which is a huge weight saving compared to traditional pipe threading machine set-ups. The case also includes a rubber seal to protect the rapid charger and batteries from the oil dripping off the threader and die heads.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Given the popularity of Milwaukee’s PACKOUT storage systems, I would love to see the option for a 2870-22 that comes from the factory in a dedicated PACKOUT box. While it would be a larger and bulkier storage solution than the standard injected molded plastic case, it would be ideal for users currently invested in PACKOUT storage. Such as the ENTIRE mechanical trades population.

M18 FUEL Batteries and Charger

The Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader is compatible with all M18 batteries. The model 2870-22 kit includes (2) RedLithium High Output XC 8.0 batteries. These 8.0 batteries are beastly while offering weight reduction compared to the 12.0 Ah batteries included with the full-size M18 Pipe Threader. During the review process, the M18 compact pipe threader was used at a couple of service call’s to thread a total of 12 pieces of 1″ black pipe. We started the job with a fully charged battery and finished with 3/4 charge still available. In my opinion, that is excellent battery performance for a tool designed to be as portable and nimble as the M18 pipe threader.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

If working on a job site without a power source the two included XC8.0 batteries provide enough power for likely a full day’s work, given the intended use of the tool. If you happen to drain both batteries the rapid charger will make quick work of charging any of your M18 & M12 Milwaukee batteries. Milwaukee advertises the Rapid Battery charger as being 40% faster than their standard charger.

Compact Yet Powerful

The Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader is much smaller than the full size and is said to be the lightest cordless pipe threader on the market. It is perfect for setting up in the area where you are working instead of a dedicated pipe-threading station. For us, bringing this lightweight threader into a residential house for one or two pipe threads is a very common application. The brushless motor provides the power to thread up to 1-1/4” black iron pipe, stainless steel, rigid metal conduit (RMC), and more. The majority of the pipe we threaded was 1″ and the M18 compact pipe threader feels tailor-made for this task. The XC8.0 batteries also provide plenty of power to thread pipe without any hesitation.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader Additional Features

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

The Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader also features the One Key tracking system to track and manage your tool. One of the best features of the Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader is the enhanced kickback control. The threader will sense kick back & automatically shut the tool off. I was originally worried about this feature being too sensitive, but Milwaukee has this tool so dialed in that it works perfectly and only stops when needed, not affecting its performance. Rubber side grips on the Milwaukee pipe threader allow you to grip the tool and apply pressure without slipping.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader Support Arm

The Compact Pipe Threader includes a support arm that locks onto the pipe and into the tool. This support arm eliminates the need for a pipe stand in certain applications. The support arm has proven to be very valuable when threading already installed pipes or doing service work in the field. In addition, when we use this compact threader along with a vise, we still find ourselves using the support arm due to the tool’s compact size. While reviewing the full-size Milwaukee pipe threader we did not always need to use the support arm because the tool was much longer and you were able to apply more leverage. This added feature has opened our eyes to the fact that support is a blessing. It can also make threading pipe an easier job regardless of which size Milwaukee threader you are using.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader Retention System

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

The Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader has an easy retention lock. This lock prevents die head ejection and holds the die head in the tool. This retention switch is an excellent feature and allows the die head to go in or come out quickly. This is a far superior system compared to traditional Rigid pipe threaders, where the die heads often get stuck. Those days are over, thanks to Milwaukee’s retention system.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Milwaukee Pipe Threader Compact Die heads

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Milwaukee now has its own branded NPT forged aluminum die heads. These die heads are only compatible with this Milwaukee M18 Compact Pipe Threader and the Ridgid 600-I Power Drive.  They are the industry’s lightest die heads and are Forged from military-grade aluminum. Their lightweight, yet durable, construction provides even more weight savings to the overall tool package. The 2870-22 kit includes (4) compact Die Heads:

  • 1/2″,
  • 3/4″,
  • 1″
  • 1-1/4″

The compact dies heads have 20% larger slots for increased visibility and less nesting. The bigger slots make oiling the threads easier as well.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Milwaukee M18 Pipe Threader Comparison

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

As mentioned earlier, we previously reviewed the Milwaukee Full-size M18 cordless pipe threader which was an absolute beast. The full-size tool is great for a wider range of pipe sizes. The full-size version is larger, stronger, heavier, and can handle a wider variety of sizes. Undoubtedly, the Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader has its place in the trade as a more portable and agile pipe threader kit that is ready to use and excellent for smaller diameter pipe and smaller jobs. They both compliment each other well with their designs and capabilities.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Final Thoughts on the Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

In conclusion, The Milwaukee Compact Pipe Threader is an excellent tool. It is sold as a complete kit, with 4 die heads, 2 batteries, and a rapid charger. It is an excellent lightweight kit for those smaller jobs of threading pipe 1-1/4″ and under. Its weight, size, and kit completeness simplify the threading process immensely. More importantly, the 2870-22 brings new technology and improved ergonomics to what has always been a pretty barbaric task in mechanical construction. Milwaukee built a lightweight, capable, and well-thought-out tool with the M18 compact pipe threader. It will reduce the fatigue and hassle commonly associated with pipe threaders and should be a staple of mechanical service trucks and light-duty commercial projects.

Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

Purchase the Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact Pipe Threader

The Milwaukee compact pipe threader can be purchased for $2,199.99. It is currently only offered as a full kit. If you normally thread pipe that is under 1-1/4″ then this is the kit for you. Since the die heads are included, I think that this is a complete high-quality kit that is definitely worth it for any tradesman in need of a new threader or that is interested in shedding some “LBS” on the job site.

When I was asked to test out this wall-mounted pressure washer by GiRAFFE TOOLS I was interested to see what it was all about. I saw mixed reviews on this product online and I wanted to have a look for myself as I have been thinking about getting a wall-mounted unit.  Having only owned a gas-powered pressure washer I was excited to see how the performance of an electric model stacked up. I was looking forward to mounting this pressure washer to my wall and having the ability to pressure wash things in seconds without all of the setup up and cleanup of a gas unit. This wall-mounted pressure washer is easily hooked up to water and plugs into a standard electrical outlet. A 100′ hose with an automatic reel function is also included making things very easy and quick to use. Below I will outline my experience.GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

Setup and Installation

GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

Upon opening the box the Grandfalls Pressure Washer was packaged well and also seemed to be good quality and rather simple to assemble. The Grandfalls Pressure Washer comes with everything pictured below. Conveniently, a mounting bracket is secured to the wall, and the pressure washer slides down onto the bracket to be easily mounted. I chose to mount mine to a piece of waterproof PVC that reached across two studs as I am not a big fan of plastic anchors. Giraffe Tools even included a small level for those that don’t have a plethora of tools laying around. I mounted mine a little higher than the recommended 24″-32″ because I didn’t want to infringe upon my storage space.

Functional Features

GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

The Grandfalls Pressure Washer includes 100′ of water hose. It also neatly stores the foam gun and sprays nozzle while not in use via the built-in holders. The hose is spring-powered and has a smart lock that will lock the hose in place when you reach the desired length. A slight pull of the hose and the automatic hose reel retraction will kick in allowing you to walk the hose back to the reel. The built-in retraction system will neatly reel the hose without kinking or binding. The pump motor also shuts off when the unit is not in use and the trigger is not being pulled which helps reduce noise like most electric units.

GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

Foam Soap Cannon

GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

I have to admit, that I was pretty excited that the Grandfalls Pressure Washer included a foam soap cannon as I’m a little late to the foam car washing craze. I immediately ordered some Chemicalguys foam body wash to test the soap gun. The soap container easily attaches to the gun. There is an adjustment knob on the top for how much soap you would like to pull. Although this foam cannon didn’t shoot thick foam like some of the professional foam guns, it was good enough for my needs.

Nozzle Tips

GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

The Grandfalls Pressure Washer also comes with four different spray nozzles (0°, 15°, 25°, 40°). Therefore, you can select your desired spray pattern and pressure output. Conveniently, they are also secured to the spray gun so that you can easily access the tip you need to use.

GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

Power and Functionality

GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

Above all, this is an electric pressure washer. Certainly, it will not compare to a gas pressure washer. It is rated at 2200 PSI when you first pull the trigger, and then it reduces slightly when in use. I found this was the perfect amount of pressure for washing my vehicles or any light-duty projects.  GiRAFFE TOOLS is going to be releasing a higher PSI (PRO) unit soon if you think this may be a little light on power for your application (keep an eye out for another review).

Room for improvement

Right off the bat, I noticed that I liked the idea of the mounting system. However, I wished that it came with a wider bracket. A bracket that expands over 16″ so it could be mounted to two wall studs would be beneficial. Comparatively, I would recommend something similar to a tv mount. A mount that covers 16″ to 20″ apart would be beneficial. A larger bracket would be a nice feature and eliminate the need for plastic anchors or a homemade wall plate.

GiRAFFE TOOLS Pressure Washer Final Thoughts

In conclusion, I tested The Grandfalls Pressure Washer for over a month. I washed several vehicles, a Badboy ZeroTurn lawn mower, my entire 30×30 garage floor, a muddy dirt bike, some siding, and many other things. I really appreciate how I can turn it on, pull the hose, and be using it in seconds. During the testing process, the pressure washer worked great. I had no problems with the pressure washer and it maintained pressure well. The foam gun worked well and having the different nozzle tips to choose from was also helpful.  The 100′ of the hose is the perfect amount to reach most of my projects in the driveway. The hose pulls out nicely and reels back in easily and neatly. I think that having a pressure washer mounted to the wall is convenient and makes life easier for quick light-duty jobs.

GiRAFFE TOOLS Grandfalls Pressure Washer Model P106-G30

Where to buy

The Grandfalls Pressure Washer can be purchased from the manufacturer via the link below for $309.79 with free shipping. I think that $309.79 is a very good price for all this pressure washer has to offer. With the included 100′ of hose, the foam gun, the different spray tips, and the 2-year warranty you really can’t go wrong.

Ryobi just recently released their new 18-volt battery-powered 10″ miter saw. I have to admit I have never used a battery-powered miter saw before. Naturally, I was interested to see how it performed compared to a traditional corded saw.  While testing I was able to use the Ryobi 10″ Miter Saw to complete the installation of trim in a new house. I also ripped through some 2x4s while framing a bathroom and then sliced some scrap LVL’s that I had laying around to really put the battery-powered Miter saw to the test.  Overall I thought the Ryobi 10″ Miter Saw delivered good power and functioned very well for most of the testing as outlined below.

Ryobi 18V One+ HP 10" Miter Saw

Ryobi 10″ Miter Saw Cut Specifications

  • Baseboard Against Fence: 3-5/8 “
  • Crown Molding Nested 45/45: 5-1/4″
  • Crown Molding Nested 52/38: 4-5/8″
  • 90° Cross Cut (nominal): 2 x 12 or 4 x 6
  • 45° Miter Cut (nominal): 2 x 8

Out of the Box

The saw comes ready to use however the top mount carrying handle and two side material supports need to be bolted on. Two bolts mount each handle to the saw with the included nuts and bolts. An Allen key is included to tighten the bolts down. It is always recommended to square the blade to the saw and the instruction manual can walk you through that process. This particular saw that I tested was dead square and I didn’t need to make any adjustments for accuracy.

Ryobi 18V ONE+ Saw Features

LED Light Cut Line Indicator

The light indicator is great for lighting up the cut area and the blade shadow assists in making accurate cuts. There is a button to turn the light on if you want to illuminate the work area without turning the saw on. I prefer when the light comes on with a small squeeze of the trigger, but appreciate that Ryobi provides a push-button option.

Brushless Motor

The brushless motor is said to deliver up to 4100 RPMs. I did not notice much if any difference between this battery-powered motor vs a traditional corded unit when cutting small to the medium-sized stock material. I do have to say it has a totally different sound, as most battery-powered tools do, but you get used to that rather quickly. The Ryobi 10″ Miter saw also has an electric brake to stop the blade when you release the trigger. Once releasing the trigger the blade stopped in about 3.74 seconds. That is a little slower than my traditional corded saw but is still within what I consider to be an acceptable range.

Slider Design Provided Up to 12″ Cross Cuts

The slider on this Ryobi saw has very little slack at full extension.

0 – 45° Single Bevel Capacity

Extended Miter Range Up to 47° Left and Right

9 Positive Miter Quick Stops at 0°, 15°, 22.5°, 31.6°, and 45° Left and Right

Dust Bag and 1 1/4″ Dust Port Compatible

The Ryobi 10″ Miter Saw has a 1 1/4″ dust port and an included dust bag that catches a good amount of sawdust. As you can see the saw is still covered in sawdust but the bag definitely cuts down on the wood dust in the work area.

Safety Switch

The safety switch on the Ryobi 10″ Miter Saw is worth mentioning. I think that most homeowners will be perfectly fine with the safety switch while contractors who are not used to having a safety switch may not be fond of having to push the switch to the left before pulling the trigger. Pushing this switch can get a little tricky when making cuts on the right side of the saw, especially if you end up using your left hand to pull the trigger. Although I didn’t like the safety switch at first, I quickly got used to pushing it in and didn’t have to think about it after using the saw for a while. Also if there are kids around, it never hurts to have some extra safety in place.

Adjustable Work Clamp

The adjustable clamp is easy to remove and switch to the other side when needed. Looking at the arm I first thought that it was plastic, however, the arm is actually made of aluminum and seems well constructed.

Ryobi PBLRS01B OEM Blade

The included 10″ 40T carbide-tipped blade is a good all-around blade. For most homeowners doing small projects, this blade will suffice.  I used the included blade for all testing. While testing, I did have to change to a finish blade for a trim project that I was working on. Changing the blade was a fairly simple task and only took a minute or two. Blades are a consumable item with miter saws and investing in a quality dedicated blade for whatever task you are working on will showcase the true accuracy of a tool.

Weight

Most of the Ryobi saw is made of heavy-duty plastic. I weighed this saw at about 33 pounds with the battery attached. I really like that this is a good quality saw and that it is lightweight. A homeowner or a contractor that is often breaking down and moving the saw may find it appealing to only have to lug around 33 pounds and still have a good quality saw. For certain projects, I need my heavy-duty saw, but most of the time I will be reaching for this significantly lighter saw.

Runtime

Ryobi claims that their 4AH high-performance battery on a full charge will deliver up to 550 cuts per charge. I used this saw over the course of a  week and on a variety of jobs that I was actively working on. While cutting trim molding the battery lasted a couple of days and was able to cut a good amount of trim without any hesitation. The battery barely went down and remained at 2/3 bars for most of the work performed. I would estimate about 200-300 cuts.  I then stepped up the cutting load by cutting 2x4s for a bathroom project. The Ryobi saw also had no problem cutting through the 2x4s but the more it works the quicker the battery will drain. Having a second battery is really important if you are going to be relying on this saw for big jobs.

Testing The Ryobi PBLRS01B Miter Saw

Now that I got some basic testing out of the way I grabbed some scrap wood. The Ryobi saw was able to cut 2×10 and 2×12 framing lumber without issue. I then began slicing the 2x10s and 2x12s repeatedly to really push the saw and that’s it when it had a hard time.  The saw quickly went into a protection mode where the blade would stop spinning until the trigger was released to reset. The battery also drained much quicker. This level of high-demand cutting was meant to push the saw to its limits. Under normal homeowner or DIYer use, the Ryobi ONE+ HP saw would perform without any issues.

For the last test, I figured I would cut some Laminated veneer lumber (LVL). For the average homeowner who doesn’t know, Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is an engineered wood product that uses multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. It is typically used for headers, beams, rim boards, and edge-forming material.

LVL is a thick and difficult piece of lumber to nail and cut.  Once I began to put the heavy load on the Ryobi Miter Saw it struggled. Yes, it was able to cut through a few pieces but the saw quickly stopped spinning and the battery drained very quickly. The same happened with multiple pressure-treated 2×12 cuts.

Ryobi PBLRS01B | Test Results

Some of the tests were a little extreme and not on par with not normal everyday use. If you need a saw to only cut large wood then you may want to look at a corded 12″ model.  For common jobs with a few larger cuts here or there, this saw will definitely do the trick.  It also easily cut 2x12s before I began doing rapid cuts.

Ryobi PBLRS01B | Room For Improvement

I think that this is a great saw but I did not enjoy putting the side supports on. As previously mentioned the side supports are mounted with two nuts and bolts per side. It is difficult to insert and then turn an Allen key in such a tight space. I would prefer an access hole in which I could have used one of my own longer Allen keys to tighten the bolt quicker. While it was annoying, it only took a few minutes to put each side together and it’s something that you only have to do once.

Final Thoughts On The Ryobi PBLRS01B

Ryobi’s Brushless 18V ONE+ HP 10″ Sliding Compound Miter Saw is an excellent saw. When selecting a saw, it must be the appropriate tool for the task at hand. If you are going to cut thick heavy wood nonstop this may not be the right choice and you may want to go with a larger corded model. For most projects, I think that this is a great saw that will tackle common small to medium-sized wood projects.

One of the biggest attractions of the 10″ saws is that they are lighter, more affordable, and easier to move from job to job. Homeowners and contractors typically go for the 10″ saw for those reasons. Having all the necessary features to complete most jobs along with being lightweight and well constructed is very appealing to most. The (single) 18v battery provided power like a corded saw until getting into the really thick material. If you have a second battery on the charger there isn’t much to worry about on the job site. I also like not having to run extension cords. I personally find it easier to just have a second battery charging if doing a big job.

Something many folks do not realize is that Ryobi has 260 ONE+ tools that are all compatible with their Ryobi 18V ONE+ Battery.

Where To Buy The Ryobi PBLMS01B?

The Ryobi 10″ Miter Saw is now available at your local Home Depot, or HomeDepot.com, as a tool only (PBLMS01B) for $349 or can also be purchased as a kit (PBLMS01K) with a 4Ah 18V ONE+ battery and charger for $399. Yes, you can spend more if you need a higher quality saw, but at this price point and with the previously listed features I think that this saw is an excellent option for many homeowners and contractors in an affordable price range.

Ryobi 40V Backpack Blower is Whispering Quietly

The Ryobi Backpack Blower is called the Whisper series for a reason. It is very quiet and Ryobi claims that it is only putting out 59 decibels of sound, which is about 85 percent quieter than a gas blower. I wanted to verify the decibels so I downloaded a basic cell phone app decibel reader. I decided to test while in turbo mode because that is when the blower makes the most noise. While wearing the blower on my back I held my phone near my ears and the app read an average of about 75 decibels. With the blower still on and in turbo mode it averaged about 67 decibels from 20 feet away.  Regardless of the decibel reading, this blower is very quiet.

Ryobi RY404017 | Weight & Comfort

The Ryobi Backpack Blower weighs 26 pounds with both 40V 6.0 Ah batteries attached.  A good amount of this weight is attributed to the twin batteries which are very large and weigh in at 4 pounds each.  The straps and back pad feel comfortable to wear for an extended period of time. Being battery-powered, there is substantially less felt vibration compared to a traditional gas-powered blower. The lighter weight and reduced felt vibration make the Ryobi Backpack Blower blower very comfortable to use.

Ryobi RY404017 Whisper Series | Features

The Ryobi Whisper has a variable speed trigger. There is a lever to lock the trigger at full throttle, which reduces user fatigue during extended use. Two end tips are also included as pictured below. The two tips appear identical to me. It’s nice to have a spare for when the first one wears out or wears. The tip is made of rubber which can be easily cut shorter if a different airflow is preferred.

Ryobi RY404017 Backpack Blower | Runtime

This kit is equipped with (2) 40V 6.0 Ah batteries and the included Rapid Charger, which charges each battery in under 60 minutes. Being OCD I like to blow off my garage floor, patio, and driveway almost daily.  These batteries stayed charged for about two weeks and lasted a good amount of time with intermittent use.  The blower had the most power in Turbo mode at full charge. As the battery’s charge gets lower so does the maximum Turbo output power. Even with one bar on the batteries the Turbo feature still works, it’s just not as powerful as when fully charged. The batteries are also positioned perfectly to check the battery power level indicator easily. Here you can see a 40v battery next to an 18v battery so you can get a sense of how large they really are.

Ryobi RY404017 BackBlower | Power

The new Ryobi 730 CFM blower has replaced the older 626 CFM model.  Ryobi’s new 730 CFM Backpack Blower has sufficient output for the majority of household cleanup tasks and is a nice upgrade from the last model. When I was using the blower along flower beds or mulch I used the blower in the standard model with the low throttle for controlled airflow. When blowing leaves or debris I often needed to push the Turbo button to access the blower’s full power. I found that I used full throttle turbo mode most of the time in open areas. Turbo mode automatically shuts off after 2 minutes, however, once it turns off you can press the button again to immediately regain maximum power.

Room for Improvement

I think this is an excellent blower and there isn’t much more I could ask for besides more power. Yes, it has good power for a battery-powered unit but I was really hoping it would compete with higher-end gas leaf blowers. Just because this is a backpack blower, do not assume that it is capable of clearing acres of fallen leaves.

Where This Blower Excels

The Ryobi 40V Backpack Blower will compete with most gas-powered handheld leaf blowers. It’s extremely quiet and delivers good power without the hassles of gas and premix oil.  If you have a large yard and you plan to do massive leaf clean-ups this is not for you. For normal non-excessive use, with small to medium leaf clean-ups, this Ryobi 40V Backpack Blower will definitely do the trick. Furthermore, by moving the bulk and weight of the design to a backpack configuration, the Ryobi Whisper would be an excellent option for older users or individuals that have issues with hand fatigue.

Where To Purchase

The Ryobi 40V Backpack Blower can be purchased at Home Depot for $409.00. I think that in today’s market this is a fair price considering that it comes with two huge 40v batteries that provide long run-times and could be used in your other 40v Ryobi tools. Plus it is covered by Ryobi’s 5-year limited warranty.
